“Mind if we take a look?” one of them asked, keeping his voice friendly.

Skyler shook his head. “Can’t. My mom says not to hand over valuables to strangers.”

The two guards exchanged a glance. He was so cute. They’d feel terrible pushing it. Besides, there was no way a little kid was the hacker, right?

Before they could decide what to do, a flashy figure darted over, scooped Skyler up, and took off running.

The guards jolted, thinking it was a kidnapper, and gave chase, but the woman jumped straight into a waiting car with the kid in her arms.

Once inside, Skyler reached up and snatched Hannah’s sunglasses off her face. “Hannah, what are you doing here? And how’d you even find me?”

She’d prepared a whole lecture for him, but somehow, he’d turned it around on her.

Hannah smiled–the kind of smile that made Skyler nervous. She pulled a small key from her pocket–the one Skyler had given Lydia. “Traded,” she said slowly, “for my favorite limited- edition bag.”

Skyler swallowed hard.

It wasn’t until midnight that Jacob’s team returned. They’d searched every inch of the building. Not a single person carrying a computer fit the profile.

The hacker had vanished.

Back in Xavier’s office, the tension was suffocating. No one dared make a sound.

Finally, someone spoke up. “Actually, there was one person we didn’t get to check. But…”

“But what?” Jacob pressed. “Spit it out.”

“It was a kid–maybe five years old. We didn’t get a chance to search him before a woman took him away,” the guard said.

“A kid?” Jacob frowned. “That’s ridiculous.” But Xavier cut in, “Do you have a picture of him?”

Whoever he’d been chatting with kept mentioning “my mom.” Xavier had assumed it was some kind of joke.

“Actually, yeah. I snapped a photo. It’s a little blurry, though.” The guard handed his phone to Xavier.

The photo showed a woman in a patterned dress and denim jacket, her back to the camera, a little boy perched on her shoulder.

The boy’s face was mostly hidden–just a blurry side profile. But something about it tugged at Xavier’s memory.

He zoomed in, staring at those eyes.

It was one in the morning when Isabella started boiling pasta, her phone pressed to her ear.

Hannah hadn’t responded to any of her messages, and a bad feeling was creeping in.

Still, she got no answer.

Isabella fired off a quick text, “Pick up, or I’m calling Grandpa.”

Her phone rang almost instantly. “Bella! You’re up late. I didn’t want to bother you, so…”

“What’s going on? Did Skyler and Lydia do something?” Isabella asked.

Her sharp instincts made Hannah stiffen.

She glanced at Skyler. They exchanged a look–eyes shifting in sync.

If Isabella found out Skyler came back without telling her, and Hannah didn’t stop him, they would both be dead.

Hannah said, “No, no. I’ve just been busy lately…”

“Put Skyler on the phone.” Isabella’s voice rose slightly.

She didn’t notice the tall figure approaching from behind. “It’s late. Who are you talking to?”

The cool voice hit her ear, and Isabella flinched so hard she dropped her phone onto the counter. She spun around. Xavier stood less than three feet away.

Just as he reached for her phone, Isabella snapped out of it and threw her arms around his waist.

The slight impact pushed him back a step, his hand landing on her bare back.

She’d just showered. Her hair was still damp, and the soft scent of her body hit him full force. His throat tightened, his gaze dropping to the thin silk dress she was wearing.

The sheer fabric hinted at what was beneath–soft curves he wasn’t supposed to see.

His pulse kicked up, heat flooding through him so fast it wiped out any thought.

Isabella pressed against him, soft and gentle.

Isabella wasn’t sure if she was imagining it, but her cheeks burned.

On the other end of the line, Skyler had just been about to say something when he heard a man’s voice, then silence.

He went quiet immediately, signaling to Hannah.

Hannah grabbed the phone, pressing a finger to her lips. Skyler tried to lean in, but she nudged him away.

She already suspected the person with Isabella was Xavier.

Those two were never really done with each other.

“Xavier… let go.” A shiver ran through Isabella.

She spoke quietly, her face against his chest–unsure if the call was still connected, afraid of being heard.

Bracing herself, she plated the pasta she’d made and set it on the table before finally speaking to him. “Want some? It’s just plain broth pasta.”

Xavier had been about to leave, but at her words, he sat down. “Sure.”

Isabella forced a smile and went to grab him some utensils.

“Why not have the staff make something better?” Xavier watched her carefully portion out a

few forkfuls of pasta for him. Something about it made his chest tighten.
