Xavier said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. But to Isabella, it felt like payback -pure and simple.

Payback for me hugging him earlier.

This guy really holds a grudge. Never lets anything slide.

Isabella didn’t bother responding. She turned to leave, but he caught her arm. “Who were you on the phone with?”

“Even married people get privacy, don’t they?” Before she could finish, he pulled her onto his lap.

His eyes had gone cold–ice–cold. “Was it Sander?”

“No.” She denied it immediately, but she couldn’t break free.

Straddling his lap, his grip on her arm forced her into an awkward embrace. His breath brushed warm against her neck. “If it wasn’t him, then why are you so nervous? And why’d you answer so fast?”

Her heart raced. Her cheeks burned all the way to her ears. “I’m telling the truth. Xavier, let me

go.”

“Give me your phone.” His voice dropped low against her ear–deliberately, she was sure- deep and smooth.

“Why would I do that?” The second she refused, Xavier pried it from her hand. “Password. Either you tell me, or I’ll have someone crack it.”

“You really don’t trust me at all, do you?” Isabella asked.

Her heart sank.

All the kids‘ photos. Their info. It’s all in there.

“I trusted you once.” His voice was flat.

Isabella stared at Xavier, caught somewhere between hurt and helpless. She knew how he operated–once he decided on something, there was no talking him out of it.

No matter what she said, she wasn’t getting that phone back.

Just as she was about to give up, he spoke again. “If I gave you another chance, would me down again?”

“No. I wouldn’t. I’m not lying to you.” She rushed the words out.

And then, a text came through from Sander.

They both froze. Isabella lunged for the phone, but Xavier got there first.

Sander typed, “Free tomorrow night? We didn’t finish our conversation earlier. Let’s meet up and talk.”

“Oh.” Xavier’s voice was dry. “So you two have nothing going on?”

He tried to smirk, but he failed.

His grip on the phone tightened, fingers burning against the screen.

What the hell is wrong with me? I almost let myself believe her. She once betrayed me.

Isabella’s heart sank. She saw his arm still wrapped around her and sank her teeth into it.

“Ouch…” The pain caught him off guard. He let out a low grunt.

“Isabella. Let go. Or I swear…” His voice was strained, dangerous.

But she bit down harder, twisting just a small bit of skin between her teeth.

Sharp pain shot through him. His jaw tightened. When she didn’t let up, he finally wrenched his arm away.

She was so focused on holding on that she lost her balance completely and fell backward, heading straight for the floor.

Her heart went cold. She braced for impact and closed her eyes. But instead of the hard floor, she heard something shatter nearby and a faint pop–like a bone shifting.

She opened her eyes. Xavier was hovering over her, a rare flash of something almost like panic in his eyes, but his expression was pure ice.

“You done?” His voice came through clenched teeth.

She blinked, dazed. Xavier’s face had gone pale, and his forehead was covered in a fine sheen

of sweat.
