Chapter 36 Like She Vanished

Sander was supposed to be figuring out a treatment plan for Jason–but they never even got to that part before Xavier interrupted.
Great. Now I’m annoyed again.
The week is almost up. I have to end this marriage. No more delays.
After texting Sander back, Isabella called Hannah. It was like Hannah had been sitting there waiting for her phone to ring–she picked up on the first second.
On the other end of the line, Skyler’s voice floated through, calling out for “Mommy.”
Isabella asked Skyler a few things about how things were at home. Hearing how natural both Skyler and Hannah sounded, she finally let herself relax.
Guess I was just being paranoid.
On the call, Hannah couldn’t really say much with Skyler right there.
But the second they hung up? She typed, “Bella, listen to me. I know you’re a hopeless romantic–but no matter how much of one you are, once is enough. Even if Xavier gets down on his knees and begs, the Carter family is not okay with you two getting back together. End it now. Don’t let Grandpa find out.”
Isabella wanted to argue.
Xavier’s too busy torturing me to grovel.
But she just texted back, “Got it.”
Hannah put her phone down and noticed Skyler still staring at her instead of going to sleep. She shifted a little. “What?”
“Hannah.” Skyler’s eyes sparkled with a sly look, his smile all innocent. “Are you hiding something from me? Like…”
“Like what?” Hannah braced herself. Skyler playing cute was the most dangerous thing.
The kid was barely six but acted like a tiny adult–always reading people, and way too smart for his own good.
How did Isabella, of all people, end up with a kid this sharp?
Skyler smiled, “Like… my dad.”
“Your dad?” Hannah didn’t even pause. “He died a long time ago.”
But Skyler’s voice only got softer. “Really? Because I think it’s weird. Mommy has guys lining up for her everywhere–but she’s never alone with any of them. So who was that man?”
“That–that’s your mom’s enemy,” Hannah stumbled, then just went with it. “Back when she was studying in our country, some people messed with her. Now she ran into one of them again. She’s only dealing with him to protect Jason.”
Skyler looked half convinced. “Mommy’s mean boss?”
“Yeah.” Hannah nodded quickly. “Yeah, exactly him.”

She tried to wrap it up. “Okay, I’m going to sleep. You should, too. Our flight’s tomorrow afternoon.”
“Hannah…” Skyler paused, then his voice got firmer. “I don’t want to leave. Because I need to protect Mommy,”
Hannah waved a hand. “Your mom’s got it handled. You’d just be in the way. And if your great–grandpa finds out…”
She stopped mid–sentence as something hit her.
Isabella is soft–hearted. If she gets tangled up with Xavier again, how am I supposed to explain that to Grandpa?
And Skyler… he isn’t like Jason. Maybe he really can protect his mom.

The next morning, Isabella got to her desk and found a new phone waiting for her.
Xavier didn’t skimp on money–it was the latest model, the one that just came out a couple of days ago.
She didn’t hesitate. She swapped out her old one.
Xavier was in his office, busy with a meeting. So she sat down at her desk and gave Jason a call.
Through the one–way glass, Xavier watched her, clearly in a good mood as she made a call. The papers in his hand nearly got crumpled into a ball.
Jacob quickly took them from him. Xavier’s hands were empty now–he shot Jacob a glare, his irritation rising.
“That’s enough for now,” he said.
He dismissed everyone except Jacob, then asked again, “What about what I told you to look into?”
