Xavier’s eyes were unreadable. He clasped his hands under his chin, and as he clenched them, a sharp pain shot through his forearm.

Seeing the grim look on Xavier’s face, Jacob immediately asked, “Mr. Moore, are you feeling all right?”

“I’m fine,” Xavier snapped. “Call the Whitman family. Now.”

Only after Jacob left the CEO’s office did Isabella finally end her call.

She pulled the divorce papers from her bag.

The terms were already laid out: Isabella would return her Moore Group shares to Xavier. After the divorce, they were to have no further contact and were not to interfere with anyone in the other’s life.

After yesterday, she had no energy left for revenge games with Xavier.

If he still refused… then this divorce wouldn’t be peaceful.

But before Isabella could stand up, her phone rang.

It was Sander.

“Hey, Sander, did you set a time and place?” she asked.

“Isabella, I’m sorry… I might have to cancel tonight.” Sander paused. His voice, quiet and hoarse, sounded lifeless over the line.

Isabella was confused. “What’s wrong? Something came up?”

“Not exactly,” Sander said, then paused again. “Well… yeah, I guess. Something important came up.”

Isabella sensed something off in his tone. “It’s okay. We can work around your schedule. If meeting up is too hard, I can come see you at the therapy center sometime.”

“Isabella.” After a long moment, Sander just said her name.

Isabella felt he seemed hesitant. “Yeah?”

Sander said, “Nothing. Forget it. I’ll talk to you later.”

Before Isabella could respond, Sander hung up.

Puzzled, Isabella set her phone down and walked to Xavier’s office door.

She considered barging in, but remembering this was likely their final negotiation, she knocked instead. After a long wait, a cold. voice answered, “Come in.”

Inside, Isabella placed the divorce papers directly in front of Xavier. “Sign it. I’ll return the Moore Group shares.”

Xavier didn’t look at her, keeping his head down as he worked.

He seemed not to have heard her.

Isabella waited a moment, then pushed the papers closer to his hand.

“Xavier…” She started to speak just as he suddenly looked up.

Meeting Xavier’s deep, icy eyes sent a jolt through Isabella’s heart.

Without a word, Xavier picked up the divorce papers.

Isabella said quickly, “If you sign now, we can still part on decent terms.”

After all, he was a man I loved once. Better to just go our separate ways than destroy each other.

That way… my heart won’t get stirred up again.

Just as Isabella had this thought, a flame appeared. Xavier lit the papers.

Watching the shock and anger spread across Isabella’s face, a faint smile played on Xavier’s lips. He gave a flick of his wrist and dropped the burning agreement into the trash can.

He said, “You and Sander… It’s never going to happen.”

Isabella stared at him, struck by how unreasonable a man could be. “What does Sander have to do with this? I told you…”

Seeing the anger barely contained on Xavier’s face, she gritted her teeth and swallowed her explanation.

She nodded curtly. “Fine. I wasn’t asking for your agreement anyway. We’ll settle this legally then.”

If it really comes to involving my grandfather, Xavier will lose more.

Though I’ll lose some, too…

But Jason can’t wait any longer.

Isabella turned and reached for the door handle, but a large hand slammed down on it first.

Then the lock engaged.

Xavier pressed her body against the door, cupped her chin with one hand, and kissed her forcefully.

Isabella tried to slap him, but Xavier blocked her arm with his. She struggled wildly, pushing up his sleeve and revealing the bite mark she’d left on his arm the night before.

An angry red ring of scab surrounded raw, pink flesh. She had literally bitten a chunk out of him.

As Isabella froze at the sight, Xavier also stopped, breathing heavily. “Is Sander that good?”

The question escaped him before he knew why he was asking it.

From last night to this moment, his mind was consumed by this damn question.

“And what about Linda?” Isabella’s eyes stung. “Was she that good? You were madly in love with her, willing to do any disgusting thing just to be with her.”

“Linda? What did I do?” Xavier gripped her chin tighter, surprise flickering in his eyes.

“You know exactly what you did! But forget it, none of that matters to me anymore.” The memory of seeing Xavier and Linda locked in a kiss made it hard for Isabella to breathe.

It was five years ago. Bringing it up now just makes it seem like I still care…

“Isabella, what the hell are you talking about?” Xavier demanded. “I’ve known Linda for years, and yes, that has nothing to do with you.”
