Isabella and Hannah’s mother had died suddenly at home years before, in suspicious circumstances. All clues pointed to their
father’s brothers and sisters.
Yet their father had rushed to sweep the whole thing under the rug, just to win their grandfather’s favor and claim his inheritance.
Isabella had run away from home in anger after that. Except for Hannah, she trusted no one in the Carter family–not even their grandfather, who had seemed to dote on them more than anyone.
Hannah fell silent at her words.
After a short pause, she spoke in a grumpy tone. “I was messing with you. This is your fight, so I won’t say a word to Grandpa.”
“Thank you.” Isabella let out a long breath, her cold sweat finally fading. She paused and added, “I’m sorry. I know you’re only trying to help.”
“You’re just too stubborn,” Hannah sighed deeply. “If you really can’t let go of him, no one can save you.”
As soon as she hung up with Isabella, Hannah opened the door–and sure enough, Skyler was pressed flat against it.
Hannah stared at him coldly. “What are you up to?”
Skyler grinned awkwardly and stood up straight right away. “Hannah, is Mom in trouble? I might be able to help.”
‘I’ll handle your mom’s problems. All you need to do is finish the stuff you stole from Moore Group and send it to me. Then we can go home sooner.” Hannah waved for Skyler to go back to his room.
Skyler stared at Hannah with wide, innocent eyes. closing the door gently.
When she didn’t soften at all, he turned and walked to his room with a sad look,
Hannah breathed out in relief.
Of course, they’re mother and son–neither of them ever makes things easy.
Once she was sure Skyler was quiet, she went back to her room and kept making calls.
She knew just the right lawyer for the job.
The next day, a business headline shocked the entire industry.
Whitman Properties had landed a 10 billion dollar investment, turning their luck completely around and becoming one of the country’s top real estate companies.
Rumors said the Whitman family had restructured entirely and planned to merge with several other firms soon. Their stock and net worth had skyrocketed a hundred times over.
Stanley saw the news from his bed and broke into a harsh cough.
Wilson quickly patted his chest, then handed him pills and a glass of water. “It’s time for your medicine.”

Stanley took the pills with Wilson’s help, caught his breath, and snapped, “An investment? Where did that come from?”
The Whitman family had answered to Moore Group for years, completely under their control.

Their business had gotten worse every year, and everyone in the industry knew they were drowning in bad debt–they’d even be heading for bankruptcy. How could they suddenly get such a huge investment?
“Didn’t people say a young lady from the Carter family moved back to the country?” Teresa pushed the door open and answered Staniey’s question right then.
Stanley’s eyes flashed coldly. “Impossible. The Carter family isn’t that foolish. Why would she invest in the Whitman family?”
‘Who knows?” Teresa shrugged. “But a sum this big, pouring into the Whitman family at the last minute… no one else but that mysterious Carter family heiress could be behind it.”
And it just has to be the Whitman family.
She’d just talked to Sander on the phone. He clearly knew something but refused to say a word.
He kept secrets even from me, his own mother–proof we are never really family.
Stanley snorted, “You’re glad the Whitman family is back on top, aren’t you?”
Teresa’s face fell. “Father, are you so old you’ve lost your memory? Have you forgotten why I married that useless Fenton in the fil ›lace?”
f the Whitman family hadn’t framed her to get close to the Moore family, tricking her into a night with Fenton, Stanley never woul have forced her to marry him after she get pregnant.
She hated the Whitman family just as much as she hated Stanley.
Stanley dropped the subject. Wilson adjusted his glasses and looked at the TV, where the news was talking about the Whitman amily’s booming stock.
It wouldn’t be a total loss,” Wilson said calmly. “If someone had been buying up Whitman Properties stock from the start, they’d e making a huge profit right now.”
Stanley and Teresa both looked troubled by his words.
Wilson then stepped quietly out of the room.
Stanley turned to Teresa. “Did Ray leave already?”
