Before Xavier could say anything, the woman, Phoebe Nash, spoke first, her tone gentle. “It’s okay. It makes sense you didn‘ recognize me—this is my first time here in years.”

She waved a hand. “You can go.”

The assistant glanced at Xavier. When he didn’t object, she looked relieved and quickly slipped out, pulling the door shut bel

“Phoebe.” Xavier didn’t take the pen she offered. Instead, he said her name coldly.

Phoebe smiled and set the pen back down on the desk. “Did you forget everything your father told you? When you see me, yo steprhother, you call me Mom.”

“The day you took on that murder case for the Whitman family, you stopped being anything to me,” Xavier said, his voice like i “You’re not welcome here. Leave. Now.”

Phoebe didn’t answer. Instead, she glanced at Sander.

He gave her a nod in thanks and walked out of the office.

Xavier moved to step forward, but Phoebe blocked him. “That’s enough. Your father’s situation has nothing to do with Sander. Moore family has already put him through enough over the years.”

“You don’t know anything.” Xavier’s jaw tightened, his eyes bloodshot. He raised his hand toward her.

Phoebe didn’t flinch. She just closed her eyes calmly.

When she opened them again, his hand was stopped inches from her face.

But the hatred in his eyes–barely contained, ready to explode–had already torn through her.

“Oh, that hurts,” she sighed. “We’re not related by blood, but I raised you. I never did you wrong, and I can honestly say that.”

She never even got to see Tanner one last time before he died.

“You’re the one who owes my father.” Xavier clenched his fist, his voice venomous. “If it weren’t for you, that man from the Whitman family would’ve been dead a long time ago.”

“It was an accident.” Phoebe’s emotions got the better of her; her voice rose despite herself. “If your father knew what you’ve become, he’d never forgive you.”

“You and I both know it wasn’t an accident.” Xavier lowered his head, his presence overwhelming, cutting off anything else she might have said.

“You’re a traitor. Out of respect for my father, I don’t want to hurt you. But you’d better stay out of my sight.”

“What about you?”

The obsession in Xavier was terrifying now, and Phoebe found it impossible to reason with him.

She said, “You keep bringing up your father, but what did you do to him? You gave up on his treatment just to take control–you!

A bone–deep chill ran straight through Phoebe. She shivered slightly and found herself unable to continue.

‘Get out.” Those two words were delivered in an icy tone that left no room for argument.

Phoebe had no desire to stay. The boy she’d raised had become someone she didn’t even recognize.

She pulled a legal notice from her bag and set it on the desk. “I’ll be handling your divorce. If you’re not willing to settle, then we’l have to go through litigation.”

With that, Phoebe took a deep breath and walked out of the office without looking back.

Xavier saw the notice and nearly laughed. A moment later, he grabbed it and tore it to shreds in a burst of fury. Then a dull ache spread through his chest.
