When a man decided to be heartless, he could really reach a level of ruthlessness that was shocking.
“An affection that gets no response does not mean anything.” Rachel said softly, her tone not quite sounding like comfort, nor like persuasion.
Linda’s heart was already filled with sadness and turmoil, and she really did not want to engage with the woman beside her.
She fell silent and accelerated the car.
Rachel lived in a nice apartment, but her place was not very large. It had a minimalist style and was very tidy.
“It is surprising that such a famous doctor lives in such a simple place. Ms. Hale, you must be very frugal usually.”
Linda was somewhat disappointed with Rachel’s residence.
It really was quite different from what she had imagined.
“Living alone, I do not need too much space. A place that is too big feels less secure.”
Rachel said as she went to fetch the factory contract.
Linda happened to notice a small photo frame turned face down, wedged into the side of the sofa.
She casually picked it up and instantly, a look of astonishment flashed in her eyes.
Inside the frame was a slightly aged photo of a couple. The woman was Rachel, who looked much younger in the picture. But the person she was leaning against…
“Ms. Allen, what would you like to drink?”
Just then, Rachel’s voice came from behind her.
Linda hurriedly put the frame back in its place and sat down on one side of the sofa.
“Oh, anything is fine. I am not picky.”
“Then how about coffee? I just bought some new coffee beans; they have a nice flavor.”
After a while, Rachel came over with two cups of coffee.

Seeing Linda staring at her intently, she could not help but find it amusing. “Ms. Allen, is there something on my face?”
“No Linda withdrew her gaze and took a sip of the coffee.
Rachel glanced at her from the comer of her eye flipped through the contract, and handed it to her.
Ms. Allen, please take a look. These are the terms I drafted, mainly a confidentiality agreement and some follow–up additions.”
Linda skimmed through it briefly and signed.
This contract was not going through the Allen family because she had not told her father about it at all.
The Allen family had so many facilities; she just needed to mention it to her mother to get it arranged.
It was just a small order for producing some medication anyway.
After signing the contract, Linda quickly left Rachel’s place.
As soon as she entered the parking garage, she called Quill, who answered only after a long time.
Upon hearing that she had reached a cooperation with Rachel, the other party praised her for doing well.
But Linda felt annoyed. “Did not you say that if I did as you instructed, you would help me get back together with Xavier? I do not even know what I am doing right now!”
She hated being led by the nose.
The cooperation with Rachel–she had not negotiated any of it; it must have all been arranged by Quill.
“Calm down.” The voice through the voice changer said. “Rushing to find Xavier like you are doing will only backfire.”
“You are not just using me, are you?” Linda always felt uneasy.
A laugh came through the receiver. “What if I am? What matters is that we each get what we need. Just do as I say. I will notify you about the next step.”
After saying that, without giving Linda a chance to speak further, the call ended.

In the evening, as soon as Xavier stepped through the front door, he caught the aroma of a home–cooked meal.
Entering the living room, he saw many household staff cleaning, the atmosphere cheerful.
When they noticed him, everyone was startled and quickly stood at attention. But before they could utter a word, Xavier gestured for them to be silent.
The staff could only nod in acknowledgment.
“Where is Mrs. Moore?” Xavier looked upstairs. The bedroom door was slightly ajar, but the lights were off.
Clearly, Isabella was not in the room.
A staff member replied, “Mrs. Moore is in the kitchen…”
“The kitchen.” Xavier’s expression turned stern. Doing what?”
“Mrs. Moore is cooking!”
Xavier’s face almost could not hold back. He had hired all these people; who allowed her to do such things again?
“But Mrs. Moore said she wanted to cook for you personally. We could not stop her.”
Just then, another staff member spoke up.
Hearing this, Xavier’s heart softened slightly, but he soon curled his lips in self–mockery.
Cooking for him?
This woman was probably trying to pull the same trick again.
Remembering the last time with the peppers… even though his sense of taste was dull, that night had not been very pleasant.
Without another word, Xavier headed straight for the kitchen.
Isabella was watching the stove at that moment. In the frying pan, several golden potato fritters were sizzling, their edges already crisp and slightly browned.

Just as she was about to lift the pan, a cold voice reached her ears. “You really are cooking.”
Startled, Isabella’s hand jerked, and the pan clattered against the serving plate.
The plate tipped over, about to shatter and spray onto her… The next moment, Isabella’s arm was grabbed, and her body was pulled by a powerful force into the safety of a solid chest.
Xavier had wrapped his arms around her and turned her away.
The plate shattered on the floor, but the man had shielded her completely behind him. Not a single shard could reach her.
