Chapter 117 Julian, where did Jake go?
Jonna smirked at the recruitment offer and said, “I will think about it.”

William’s eyes widened as the realization finally hit him. He looked from Jake, a seasoned elite soldier, the calm woman standing before him. “Wait… Jake,” William stammered, his voice filled with shock. “She’s the boss? You’re following her order?”
Jake just grinned, adjusting his tactical pack. “Best decision I ever made, Will.”
Before William could process the shock of an elite operator deferring to a civilian woman, one of his soldiers stopped near the back counter and yelled, “Wait a minute! This place is supposed to be filled with super cool military gear! Where is everything?”
Jake, looking a little guilty, quickly avoided the soldier’s gaze. “I have no idea. It was empty when we got
here.”
William shook off his confusion, his focus remaining entirely on his old friend. “Wait, where are you guys going anyway?”
“We need to make another stop before going to Aurora,” Jake replied, walking toward the exit. “Text me once you talk to Briggs. I will try to talk more with Joanna about your offer.”
The two men shared a brief, firm hug, and then Jake jogged out to the motorcycles. Joanna, Jake, and Julian slid their helmets on, revved their engines, and rode off into the late afternoon, leaving the completely baffled military squad behind in the empty showroom.
The three made their way to the coast. The trip was tedious. Every ten minutes, zombies would shuffle to them and the team killed them all. As they drove though a very small town Joanna signalled them to stop over at a gas station. It likely had gas Joanna could siphon.
The low rumble of the motorcycle engines died down, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the dusty town. The late afternoon sun cast long, bleeding shadows across the cracked pavement of the abandoned gas station. The station looked dark. Most of the rows inside were empty looking like someone else already stripped it of food.
Before the dust could even settle, three groaning figures stumbled out from behind a rusted delivery truck. They were shambling, flesh-tearing monsters, their jaws snapping in hunger. Without a word, the team moved. Joanna, Jake, and Julian swung down from their bikes, pulling heavy baseball bats from their gear. With practiced, brutal efficiency, they swung. Three sharp cracks echoed through the quiet street as metal met bone, crushing skulls and sending the creatures collapsing into the dirt.
Wiping a splash of dark grime from her sleeve, Joanna moved toward the fuel pumps. She closed her eyes, activating her storage space ability to siphon the remaining gasoline directly out of the underground tanks and into her storage dimension. Julian stepped back, holding his bat tightly as he stood guard, his eyes scanning the empty street for more danger. Jake walked towards the station’s buildings.
“Please! You have to help me!”
The frantic cry cut through the quiet. A beautiful, disheveled woman stumbled out from the side of the station. Tears streamed down her dirt-streaked face as she locked eyes with Jake.. She grabbed his arm, her hands trembling violently.

“Inside the auto shop,” she sobbed, pointing a shaking finger toward the dark alley at the side of the building. “My baby sister… she’s trapped. The monsters are cornering her inside the garage. Please, they’re
ing to kill her!”
Jake, usually quiet and intensely protective, felt a surge of sympathy. He looked at the weeping woman, nodded grimly, and followed her around the corner of the building toward the dark, narrow alley.
The moment they stepped out of sight of the main lot, the woman’s frantic expression completely vanished. Her crying stopped instantly.
Before Jake’s eyes could adjust to the shadows, two large men stepped out from behind a stack of old tires. Jake tried to raise his arms to activate his metal-bending abilities, but he was a second too late. One of the men swung a heavy wooden club, striking Jake hard across the back of the head. The metal user dropped heavily to the pavement, stunned and unconscious.
The two men immediately dropped to their knees, their rough hands tearing through Jake’s tactical vest and pockets, desperately hunting for food. One of them pulled out a packet of beef jerky and a plastic bottle of clean water. He threw them with a smirk toward the woman standing casually at the edge of the alley. She caught them, ripping the jerky open with her teeth.
“Hurry up,” she muttered around a mouthful of food, keeping her eyes glued to the street. “There are two more out front. A guy and a girl. They’ve got motorcycles loaded with gear.”
The man who had thrown the food wiped his brow, a cruel grin spreading across his face. “Let’s lure the other guy back here, too. Go put on the act again.”
His partner chuckled, patting the heavy club in his hands. “Yeah. Once we knock the next guy out, we can take all their gear, head back to camp, and we can keep the woman to play with us later.”
Back at the pumps, Joanna suddenly froze, her siphoning interrupted by a bad feeling. She looked around, her eyes narrowing. “Julian, where did Jake go? He’s been gone too long.”
