“Also,” Julian added, squeezing her hand as he looked around the room, “we are here, and we all have your back.”
Joanna stood up, breaking the tension in the room. “I need to check on the progress with the pigeons.”
Everyone followed her out of the command tent, walking past the gravel courtyard and heading toward the secluded edge of the wooded area.
When they arrived, they found Raven standing with Uncle Nate and Titan who was wearing his F.B.I vest, The construction was already complete. All of the nesting boxes had been built, forming a strange, tiered network of natural earth platforms molded by Allen and tightly interwoven with thick, sturdy vines grown by Jolie.
Despite the completed structures, Dante was completely flustered. The bloated pigeon president was pacing frantically along a high branch, flapping his large wings and squawking in obvious anger.
Raven stood directly below him, her eyes focused in deep concentration as she used her mind, desperately trying to calm the bird leader down. Just behind her, Jolie and Allen were leaning against Uncle Nate, casually sipping water from plastic bottles and watching the bizarre avian tantrum unfold.
Joanna, past the point of patience, crossed her arms and snapped, “Now what?”
Raven turned to her, looking stressed. “Dante asked for Titan to serve as his personal security detail, but Titan refused. They both understand each other, and things got heated.”
Just then, Titan growled deeply. The small corgi reared up a little on his short legs and slammed his front paws onto the dirt, barking loudly.
That sudden bark activated Titan’s gravity control. An invisible weight crashed down from above, instantly ( slamming Dante off his branch and onto the ground. The bloated pigeon president lay flat on his chest, pinned firmly to the earth by the little corgi’s power, squawking in frantic, muffled protest.
Joanna rushed forward and scooped up an enraged Dante before the little corgi could flatten him any further. The bloated bird president immediately went wild in her arms, his head jerking violently from side to side and his glassy black eyes wide with fury as he cooed at top volume, clearly giving Titan a piece
of his mind.
Titan just huffed, giving a smug little flick of his stubby corgi tail and turning his back on the bird.
Watching the tiny dog effortlessly dominate the leader of the avian political body, Allen couldn’t help himself. He took a sip of his water and let out a dry snort.
“Well,” Allen muttered sarcastically, “there goes our historic peace treaty. Flipped entirely upside down by a ten-pound loaf of bread.”
Joanna marched back over, plunking the furious bird president safely onto his vine perch, and immediately snatched Titan off the ground. She clamped her hand around the little corgi’s muzzle, forcing him to look her straight in the eye.
“Titan, cut it out!”

Without preamble, she tossed the stubby dog through the air to Jake, who caught the squirming loaf with practiced ease.
Joanna turned and stared hard at Dante, her gaze instantly freezing the bird mid-tirade. The massive pigeon puffed out his chest feathers, completely shutting up as he sensed the sharp killing intent radiating off her.
She spoke through gritted teeth. “Raven, remind Dante I saved his nests earlier in order for payment. Then tell him Titan is your security detail, not his, so he can’t order him around. As for security…”
“Briggs!” Joanna yelled.
Briggs let out a sharp, short whistle. Instantly, a heavily armed soldier stationed on top of the shipping. container wall stepped forward, bringing his rifle to a crisp ready position.
Joanna crossed her arms, keeping her eyes locked on the bird. “Raven, tell him that is his security.”
Raven quickly translated everything to Dante. The fierce, political bird instantly collapsed into a state of total submission. He waddled down from his perch, his bass-heavy coos dropping into a much softer, rhythmic purr as he approached Joanna. Leaning his massive, bloated body forward, he began affectionately rubbing his feathered head against her crossed arms.
Raven blushed slightly, clearing her throat. “He is saying that you are a most beautiful leader. He apologizes for not checking with you first.”
