Chapter 206 Call Me Piper!

The tension at the edge of the woods broke, leaving a wave of barely suppressed snickers floating in the sweltering air. Dante the pigeon president sat on the far end of his branch, aggressively smoothing down his feathers in a dramatic huff of wounded political dignity. Julian stood rigidly beside Joanna, a silent, dark-eyed sentinel warning the avian dictator against any further boundary violations with a single, icy glare.
Joanna rolled her eyes at the escalating poultry politics and shook her head. “Raven,” she directed, her tone completely deadpan. “Tell the President it’s best if he leaves the premises as soon as he is done laying his eggs. I’ll be back to check on his reproductive progress in a few hours.”
Turning her back on the offended bird, Joanna addressed her group. “Look, I’leveled up to fourteen, and my storage space is glitching out with new features. I am honestly unsure of everything happening in there right now. Let’s go figure it out as a team.”
Without waiting, Joanna marched away, leading her eager squad straight into the underground shelter. Without a word, she activated her system and pulled the entire team directly into her pocket dimension.
“Before we figure out the Level 14 upgrades,” Joanna announced, a mischievous glint in her eye, “I brought in that lethal Pulsor Plant I fought this morning. I think it’s time to introduce you guys.”
She led the group behind the main villa, where the massive, terrifying predatory plant was currently sprawled out across the grass like a sunbathing puppy. The moment it spotted Joanna, a cheerful voice echoed in her mind: Hello, my friend! The mental link functioned seamlessly thanks to the glowing green vine wrapped around Joanna’s wrist.
“These are my friends,” Joanna spoke aloud, gesturing to her bewildered team. “Can they also have a vine to hear you?”
The Pulsor Plant shimmered enthusiastically. It extended a thick, main tendril, sprouting multiple tiny, woven green bracelets that looked remarkably like botanical friendship bands. Within seconds, everyone had a leafy accessory snapped onto their wrists.
Jolie, never one to be intimidated by a mutant carnivore, waved eagerly and spoke first. “Hello! I am Jolie. Let me know if you need anything at all around here!”
Thank you, Jolie! the plant beamed back, its mental voice echoing inside everyone’s skulls with a bizarrely polite, friendly ring.
As the initial shock wore off, the team exchanged amused, grinning glances. Allen stared down at his wrist, completely fascinated. “Okay, this is officially neat,” he muttered with a dry chuckle. “I did not have ‘hearing a high-tier mutant weed speak directly into my brain’ on my apocalypse bingo card today.”
The shift in the plant’s posture was subtle, but the sudden rustle of its small, delicate flowers sent a wave of absolute stillness through the group.
Caleb froze, stepping back as dry dread filled his throat. Prophetic memories flashed of entire superhuman squads annihilated by this exact flora. It looked like a harmless pet, but he and Joanna shared a silent understanding: only they knew the world-ending destruction hidden in those pretty vines.
“We will start checking everything in the space,” he commanded smoothly. “Split up, inspect the sectors,

and meet back here in a while to see what differences there are.”

The squad dispersed with practiced efficiency. Caleb and Kailee hurried toward the glowing spring, while Uncle Nate and Briggs marched toward the livestock pen. Allen, RJ, and Jake jogged off toward the storage warehouse. Raven headed down the path to the garden, Titan trotting at her heels like a fluffy bodyguard.
Julian lingered for a fraction of a second. Turning to Joanna, his intense, dark gaze softened with a heavy, protective warmth. He reached out, his long fingers wrapping firmly around hers to squeeze her hand in a silent reassurance that sent a sudden jolt of warmth through her veins.
“I’ll start in the villa,” he murmured, his voice a low friction against her senses, before he released her and walked off toward the front doors.
The heavy silence of the lawn settled around them. Only Jolie and Joanna stayed behind, standing together facing the plant.
“How about we give you a name?” Joanna spoke up to the plant, her voice softening. “Do you know what you want to be called?”
The Pulsor Plant shimmered enthusiastically, its vines undulating in a joyful rhythm. A moment later, a bright, cheerful thought-wave projected directly into Joanna and Jolie’s minds, echoing with a rhythmic, musical cadence.
Piper! the plant beamed, the name carrying a bouncy, energetic hum. I like Piper! Like the music of the wind in my leaves!
