Briggs, Jake, Julian, RJ, and Kailee immediately formed a tight defensive wall across the asphalt, drawing their weapons and channeling their abilities as the snow fell steadily around them.

Two minutes later, the sound hit them.

A low, vibrating rumble filled the air, rapidly growing into a deafening chorus of frenzied shrieks and mindless roars. The terrifying noise grew louder and louder by the second as the monsters tracked the trail northward.

Then, they saw them.

Tearing down the wide streets under the steady snowfall came a massive, suffocating wall of the undead. Hundreds of frozen, mutated zombies poured violently out from two separate intersecting avenues, merging into a single, overwhelming tidal wave of rotting flesh and flashing teeth, surging directly toward their position.

The group panned out across the frozen asphalt as the steady snow fell around them, and what occurred next was absolute savagery.

RJ stood firm at the center of the line, her eyes flashing with a sharp silver light as her mental telepathy flared. Invading the rotten, fractured minds of the oncoming front line, she ruthlessly severed their targeting and slammed a massive command into their brains. With a chorus of confused, guttural roars, the first wave of zombies pivoted violently, tearing into the second wave behind them in a cannibalistic frenzy of tearing flesh and snapping jaws.

To her flank, Kailee stepped forward and threw her hands outward, her air manipulation answering the call with terrifying force. She unleashed a succession of massive, high-pressure pulses of kinetic air that slammed into the intersection. The sheer atmospheric displacement sent dozens of zombies flying backward over a hundred feet, their decaying bodies/shredding against the concrete upon impact. Without skipping a beat, she twisted her wrists, channeling the freezing winds into twisting, localized micro- tornadoes that tore down the asphalt, scooping up/clusters of the undead and throwing them like ragdolls to push the horde back.

Julian grinned, raising his palms toward the heavy grey clouds. Pure blue arc energy crackled across his skin before he brought his hands down, summoning large, blinding bolts of lightning directly from the sky. The thunderclaps shook the surrounding skyscrapers as the high-voltage electricity arced through the dense packs of the undead, vaporizing the central columns and instantly turning waves of zombies into smoking, blackened husks.

Right beside him, Briggs capitalized on the opening. He threw his arms wide, shooting massive, towering walls of white-hot fire across the entire width of the street. The blazing inferno roared against the falling snow, enveloping entire groups of zombies and reducing them to drifting gray ash before they could even cross the barrier.

Jake, remaining cool and quiet, weaponized his metal manipulation to turn the battlefield into a literal firing range. Drawing on the rusted rebar from the broken concrete and the metal scraps of nearby abandoned structures, he suspended hundreds of sharp shards in the air around him. With a flick of his wrist, he shot the razor-sharp metal pieces into the remaining horde with machine-gun velocity. The continuous storm of kinetic metal tore through the oncoming ranks, shredding their bodies to a bloody pulp.

The horde kept coming. Side streets disgorged hundreds more, their frozen feet churning through the blackened remains of the first wave.

The team shifted without a word. Kailee’s vortex screamed open and Briggs drove fire into its throat-a tornado of white flame dat carved a burning corridor down the avenue. On their right, Jake seeded the air with iron and Julian ignited it, the electrified shrapnel tearing through the dense columns in crackling

waves.

Still, a few slipped through.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

Joanna threaded between them in flashes, sickle sword already drawn. Five zombies, one arc of the blade. Their heads dropped into the snow in a loose, quiet row. She was gone before the last one landed.

After an hour of intense fighting, the relentless horde finally thinned out. Joanna stood amidst the carnage, a satisfied smile breaking across her face as she took a slow drink of her remaining spring water. She watched as RJ used her mental telepathy to smoothly command the few remaining stragglers to scatter and disperse into the side streets, while Jake and Julian moved lazily through the intersection, casually picking off small clusters of zombies that tried to rally.

Stepping forward, Joanna lazily waved her hand across the sprawling piles of the dead. Her pocket dimension rippled, quietly vacuuming up the scattered zombie cores straight into her storage space without her having to lift a finger.

Briggs walked over to join her, his usual cold, aloof demeanor completely replaced by an intense, buzzing fighting energy. The raw bloodlust running through his veins made his eyes bright and alert as he looked over the aftermath.

“Look at that, Joanna!” Briggs said, a rare, thrilled smirk cutting across his face as he gestured down the main avenue. “That is easily a ten-foot wall of bodies right there. The firepower on those new combinations is devastating.”

Joanna grinned, giving two thumbs up to Briggs in response to his rare, proud bragging. Turning to the rest of the crew, she waved her arms to assemble them.

“Let’s go,” Joanna called out, her voice confident. “That wall of dead is going to choke up the intersection and keep any other threats away from this sector for a while.”

With a fluid motion, her pocket dimension rippled outward, drawing Briggs, Jake, Julian, RJ, and Kailee safely back into her storage space. Left completely alone on the blood-slicked, snow-covered avenue, Joanna focused her mind on the geographic tracking coordinates Caleb had provided.

Pop.

Space warped instantly. Joanna materialized just a block away, landing smoothly on the frosted pavement directly outside the secure location where Jolie and Major Levi’s group were waiting.

Waving her hand, Joanna expanded her pocket dimension and pulled everyone out, including Caleb, onto the snow-dusted pavement. The unified group quickly turned and entered the building where Jolie stood guarding the entrance.

The structure was a large bank, but the interior was pitch dark and stuffy, smelling faintly of stagnant air and old decay. The tall security windows by the teller counters were marred with dried, dark smears of old blood that had been violently wiped across the glass.

In the shadows of the wide lobby, the forty soldiers were scattered across the floor, huddled together and sharing a few meager crackers while looking utterly exhausted from their frantic run through the snow.

Joanna walked past them and stepped into a large conference room situated on the ground floor. Inside, the scene was just as grim. Several emaciated soldiers were slumped heavily against the walls, their eyes closed in deep fatigue. At the center of the room, Major Levi stood by a long mahogany table, talking in low, serious tones to a few of his remaining officers.

Joanna looked around the dark, stuffy room and turned to Jake. “Close up the entrance with metal gates.

Jake gave a firm nod and walked toward the front of the bank. Within moments, the screech of bending steel echoed through the lobby as he used his metal manipulation to pull down the exterior security shutters, fusing the seams together to seal them inside for the night.
