Chapter 237 Major Levi

Major Levi cleared his throat, leaning forward as his expression darkened. His eyes locked onto the tall, stern man sitting right at the table beside Joanna.
“Briggs,” Levi said, his voice carrying the heavy weight of their shared history. “I have new intel about that dog Jax. He is trying to build an army of awakened soldiers. He’s promising them that he can make them bigger and stronger.”
Briggs tightened his grip on his fork but remained silent, his jaw clertched as the unresolved tension of their past military days hummed between them across the mahogany table.
Joanna let out a cold, sharp laugh, drawing Levi’s focus back to her. “He wants to perform testing on them first. They’re just lab rats to him.”
Major Levi frowned, staring down at the table, though he gave Briggs a brief, knowing nod. “Perhaps,” Levi admitted, his voice tight. “But he took several people with superpowers with him when he passed through here. Whatever he is planning, he already has the raw material.”
Briggs set his fork down with a dull clank, his face hardening as he looked directly at Major Levi.
“You shouldn’t have tried to take Jax on without proper intel, Levi,” Briggs said, his tone grave and unyielding. “You know exactly how underhanded that man is.”
Major Levi’s face flushed an angry, mottled red. He slammed his fist onto the mahogany table, rattling the plates of beef and cornbread.
“He left us to die overseas, Briggs!” Levi hissed, his voice trembling with a sudden, furious heat. “He is nothing but a coward!”
Briggs stared at him, his expression completely unbothered by the outburst. “You always were a hothead,” he said flatly.
Major Levi swallowed hard, the anger draining from his face as quickly as it had flared. He looked away, staring down at the polished wood of the table, silently admiting that Briggs was right.
“Well,” Levi said, his voice dropping to a weary murmur. “There is no high command anymore, Briggs. What do we do?”
Briggs shrugged, leaning back in his chair. “You can take over the base at Evercrest. Its bones are good, but you will need to set it up somewhere.”
Levi looked up, his eyes widening in genuine surprise. “I thought you were going there.”
Briggs didn’t answer right away. Instead, he turned his head and looked at Joanna. For a fraction of a second, his hardened eyes softened-a change so incredibly quick that Levi thought he was completely imagining it.
“I was never cut out to command that base,” Briggs said, breaking the silence as he looked back at Levi. “Take it.”
Joanna finished eating and set her utensils down neatly on the plate. She leaned forward, capturing Levi’s

Tull attention. “Look, I am willing to get you out of here, Levi. But you may consider partnering with my
base. I can help you now, but later, you return the favor.”
Major Levi instantly stiffened, his eyes narrowing as his military caution clashed with the desperate reality of his situation.
“Partnering?” he repeated, his voice heavy guarded. “I have forty soldiers left to think about, Joanna. Helping us out at an old base that can barely keep the zombies out doesn’t seem like partnering. For all I know, you could be setting us up. I’ve seen enough ‘saviors’ turn into tyrants lately to trust a free meal.”
He paused, his gaze darting between Joanna and Briggs, trying to read the unspoken dynamic between them. He tapped his fingers anxiously on the mahogany table, looking out at his exhausted men in the lobby.
“But the truth is, we have nowhere else to go,” Levi admitted, his voice dropping as his caution gave way to stark honesty. “Evercrest is just empty bones, and forty men aren’t enough to hold it against Jax or the aberrations. I don’t want a separate base, Joanna. I want to bring my remaining soldiers into your base. We want to join you.”
Joanna immediately shook her head, her face turning cold. “No. My base is already tightly managed, and I don’t absorb entire military units blindly. You have your own baggage, and I don’t need forty potential mutineers under my roof.”
“We are disciplined soldiers, not mutineers!” Levi argued, leaning forward, his voice rising in frustration. “We can secure your perimeters, run your logistics, and fight your battles! You want a favor later? We will give you our full compliance now. My men are starving, Joanna. If we stay out here, we die. We need your walls.”
