Chapter 239 Settling In

Finished

Joanna spotted the row of modern washing machines and immediately understood what Jolie was trying to do. A bright smile broke across her face.

“Jolie, that is a fantastic idea!” Joanna praised her warmly. “Good job thinking ahead about their clothes.”

Jolie puffed her chest out proudly, shooting a smug look at Julian.

Joanna then turned her gaze toward Julian. Her expression softened into an incredibly sweet, innocent smile, and her voice dripped with playful charm. “Julian, how sweet you are to help them out!”

Julian’s rigid posture instantly deflated. The dark, terrifying aura around him vanished as he let out a miserable, defeated grumble. He rolled his eyes toward the ceiling, completely powerless against Joanna’s sweet-talking, and stepped forward. Reaching down, he grabbed the heavy black power cords of the washing machines directly with his bare hands.

Crackĺzzt!

Tiny, controlled currents of bright blue electricity hummed from his palms and surged straight into the cords. Instantly, the digital displays on the washing machine’s lit up, and the heavy-duty drums began to spin with a steady, rhythmic mechanical whir.

Several exhausted soldiers who were walking back from the showers froze in their tracks, staring with their jaws dropped in absolute shock. To them, a human being acting as a living, breathing electrical generator was something out of a comic book.

Meanwhile, over by the marble counter, Jolie, Kailee, and RJ all buried their faces in their hands, snickering loudly as they watched the fearsome “Captain Crispy” completely cave under Joanna’s praise.

“Jolie, Levi and his crew can bunk in the back safe,” Joanna directed, smoothly pivoting back into command mode. “Pull out a portable heater and some bedding for them so they can finally get a comfortable night’s sleep.”

She turned her gaze toward the bank’s broken counters, her eyes locking onto a row of shattered safety deposit boxes. “Jake, make sure to clean out the jewelry for me. Don’t leave anything valuable behind.”

Before Jake could nod, Caleb stepped out of the shadows. His face was pale, and he walked over with a tense, hurried stride, speaking in a low, strained whisper.

“Joanna, we need to talk!”

Joanna looked closely at his face, and a cold weight immediately settled in her stomach. The raw anxiety in his eyes told her everything she needed to know-it was definitely not good news.

Caleb pulled Joanna aside, his voice dropping to an anxious murmur.

“The two dominant gang factions just learned Jax’s methods,” Caleb said, his hands clenching. “They figured out how to make monsters of their own. There are whispers they successfully engineered an aberrant zombie.”

Joanna frowned deeply. She knew of powerful Zombie Kings, but a man-made, laboratory-engineered

aberrant was completely new-and incredibly dangerous.

Hearing the commotion, Major Levi walked over, his expression grim.

“My men saw it,” Levi intervened heavily. “Bullets bounced right off its hide. We were only able to run away because it was distracted, but we had to leave all our salvaged grocery store food behind. We barely escaped with our lives.”

Caleb’s eyes darted toward the hallway, his voice dropping an octave as he rushed to explain the rest of his findings.

“My mental threads picked up more,” Caleb continued, the tension radiating off him “Both Blood Fang and The Progeny know about you now. It happened the second you took out those lookouts. Blood Fang is still hellbent on killing Levi, and The Progeny doesn’t want you operating in this city. They see you as too powerful.”

Joanna leaned against a marble pillar, her expression turning ice-cold as she listened.

“They are terrified of what you can do,” Caleb warned, looking between Joanna and a visibly pale Major Levi. “They think if they team up, their combined forces can completely wipe us out before we can establish a permanent foothold.”

“Tomorrow, I will create a diversion, and the team can take the soldiers to the subway,” Joanna commanded, already mapping out the strategy. “We take shifts tonight.”

She waved the rest of her core team over to the center of the lobby. “A few of you should absorb cores to boost your strength, and a few will stand guard. Let’s back away from the entrance.”

Caleb stepped forward. His features possessed a striking, androgynous beauty that seemed completely untouched by the harsh world outside. “Look, I am useless in a heavy fight tomorrow,” he volunteered softly. “So let me stand guard tonight while you guys rest up for the diversion.”

Joanna smiled a little, nodding in approval. “That’s a good plan, Caleb.”

With the logistics settled, Joanna’s team set up their camp directly behind the thick marble teller counters, safely away from the cold glass doors. From her pocket dimension, she pulled out comfortable cots, thick pillows, and heavy, warm blankets. Soft battery-powered lanterns cast an amber glow against the dark walls, and a large kettle of hot, fragrant tea was brewed, instantly creating a cozy, secure bedding area in the middle of the ruined bank.

Major Levi stood near the edge of the camp, watching the luxury unfold with wide eyes. He shook his head in absolute bewilderment, looking at his senior officers.

“It’s the literal apocalypse,” Levi muttered under his breath, completely stunned. “And she lives this good?”

Julian quietly pushed two cots together, smoothing a thick air mattress across them to create a spacious, comfortable bed. He moved with practiced, silent efficiency, stretching fresh sheets over the top before pouring steaming hot tea into a thermos, setting it within arms’ reach in case Joanna got thirsty in the middle of the night.
