Chapter 249 Jessica Realizes Her Mistake

Joanna slowly drifted down the marble staircase, the fluffy pink bunny slippers making a soft, ridiculous. squeaking sound with every step. She leaned against the banister at the landing, resting her chin on her hand as she looked over the crowd with a deceptively sweet smile.
Jessica took a deep breath, smoothing down her jacket as she plastered on a sugary, confident smile. She stepped right past Julian and walked to the very base of the staircase, looking up at Joanna with mock pity.
“Oh, sweetie,” Jessica said, her voice dripping with condescension. “Julian didn’t want to say anything because he’s too polite, but it is incredibly rude to parade around his mansion in bathrobes while the rest of us are working to maintain this fortified house. If you can’t contribute anything useful to this household, the least you could do is dress decently.”
The entire living room went dead silent.
Major Levi and his forty battle-hardened soldiers collectively stared at Jessica as if she had just lost her mind. Rachel let out a loud, mocking laugh from the sofa, while Briggs simply leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms with a look of pure, amused anticipation. They all knew exactly what the woman in the bunny slippers had done to an entire warehouse block and a horde of super zombies just an hour ago.
Julian’s face went pale with terror. “Jessica, shut your mouth right now! You have no idea who you are talking to!”
Jessica held up her hand, completely misinterpreting his panic as affection. “No, Julian! I’m doing this for your own good! You shouldn’t let freeloaders take advantage of your kindness just because they have a pretty face!”
Joanna didn’t lose her smile. She simply tilted her head, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, playful light as she looked down at the furious girl.
“You think I’m a freeloader, Jessica?” Joanna asked softly, her voice echoing perfectly in the quiet hall. “That’s funny. The last person who talked down to me like that is currently being digested by several zombies.”
The soldiers and Major Levi silently took a collective step back, clearing a wide berth around the base of the stairs as if preparing for an imminent explosion.
Jessica didn’t notice. She crossed her arms, letting out a sharp, mocking scoff. “Oh, please. You need to wake up to the world outside, sweetie. It has actual monsters out there. Julian and I have real responsibilities, and we can’t just keep taking care of a useless burden like you.”.
Joanna blinked, her wide eyes looking completely innocent. Standing there in her plush robe and pink bunny slippers, she still looked like a sweet, sheltered college girl who had never seen a drop of blood.
“Those monsters?” Joanna spoke up, her voice light and entirely unbothered. She tilted her head, a deceptively soft smile gracing her lips. “Well, at least humans have developed powers to battle against
them.”
She took one slow, delicate step down the marble stairs.
“The real tragedy,” Joanna continued, her voice dropping into a sweet, chilling purr that made the hairs on

Juhan’s arms stand up, “is when humans don’t have any powers at all, but still choose to act like monsters.
They usually don’t last very long out here.”
“What are you talking about?” Jessica asked, her brows furrowing as she tried to maintain her aggressive
stance.
Joanna didn’t answer. Instead, she simply gestured toward the sofa with a subtle tilt of her head. “Did
you know Rachel over there is a telepath? She can control minds and sense exactly what people are thinking.”
Down on the couch, Rachel caught the cue. She looked up, locking her eyes directly onto Jessica, and gave a small, slow wave.
The silence in the living room stretched, heavy and suffocating. In an instant, the color completely drained from Jessica’s face. The harsh reality of her situation finally breached her delusion; she realized with absolute horror that every single petty, murderous thought she had just harbored about targeting Joanna and the rest of the women had been broadcasted in real-time to the entire room of hardened killers. Do all of them have powers?
Jessica looked at Julian, her bottom lip trembling as if she were about to burst into tears, desperately trying to play the victim.
But she didn’t get the chance.
In a sharp, concussive pop of folded space, Joanna materialized right in front of her, the sweet, innocent smile still plastered on her face.
“Ahhhhh!” Jessica screamed, the sudden proximity shattering her remaining nerves as she tripped over her own feet and collapsed hard onto the ground.
“Get away from me, you freak!” Jessica shrieked from the floor, her terror rapidly morphing into desperate, ugly rage. “You think you’re special just because you have these powers? You’re a monster! A parasite! Julian would never love something like you!”
Joanna merely smirked, looking down at her with cold amusement. The absolute disrespect in that smirk pushed Jessica completely over the edge. Scrambling to her feet in a blind, jealous frenzy, Jessica swung her arm wild and slapped Joanna across the face.
CRACK.
The room gasped, but Joanna barely even blinked, her head turning slightly from the impact.
Julian’s face went completely pale. He rushed over in a blind panic, completely bypassing Jessica to grab Joanna’s hand. He checked her cheek, his voice trembling with genuine fear. “Are you ok, Joanna? Did she hurt you?”
Seeing Julian completely ignore her to fret over her rival, Jessica stood there completely livid, her face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.
The response to Jessica’s slap was instantaneous and terrifying. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the mansion vanished, replaced by the crushing aura of elite killers protecting their own.
Jolie stepped forward, the green and violet vines snaking down her arms beginning to rattle and shake with a deadly, violent vibration. Beside her, Briggs didn’t say a word, but the sudden roar of flames
