Chapter 251 They Turned Against Humanity

Finished

The rest of the afternoon passed in relative peace. Inside the fortified mansion, the suffocating tension of the subway tunnels finally began to lift. Joanna’s core group easily mingled with Major Levi’s men, sharing jokes and helping the newly awakened soldiers process their sudden influx of power.

The training session was proving to be highly successful. One of Levi’s soldiers, who had spontaneously awakened a water ability just yesterday, showed a dramatic improvement after absorbing a few crystals his control over moisture would be a massive asset for the team in the summer.

A few other soldiers successfully unlocked earth abilities, their skin taking on a dense, rocky sheen. Another soldier managed to trigger a speed power identical to Leo’s, his movements blurring across the living room as he tested his new reflexes.

The final breakthrough came from a private who awakened a metal ability. He and Jake immediately hit it off, sitting in the corner of the grand hall comparing notes on how to warp iron and reshape structural steel. For the first time in months, the future didn’t look completely bleak for Levi’s detachment.

When dinner was finally cleared, Joanna tapped into her pocket dimension once more. She stepped into the center of the room and placed three large baskets on the table, piled high with fresh fruits that still glistened with morning dew.

The entire room went dead silent.

Major Levi slowly stepped forward, his hand trembling slightly as he reached out and held up a crisp, flawless red apple. Beside him, one of the newly awakened soldiers cautiously picked up a plump strawberry, staring at it as if it were made of solid gold.

Then, the soldiers completely lost it.

To men who had been surviving on stale crackers, expired canned rations, and filtered sludge, the sight of fresh, sweet fruit was an impossible miracle. Shouts of disbelief echoed through the hall, and tears gathered in the eyes of several hardened infantrymen as they took their first real bites. They had genuinely believed they would never taste anything like this again in their lifetimes.

Joanna watched them with a quiet satisfaction, knowing that a well-fed army was an army ready to fight.

Joanna turned to her core group, her voice cutting through the emotional chatter. “Tonight you rest, and we leave tomorrow. I have something to take care of tonight, so Levi, you and your men will be on security duty.”

Briggs frowned, setting down his half-eaten apple as his protective instincts kicked in. “What is going on, Joanna? Where are you going alone?”

Joanna looked away, staring toward the dark window as a heavy, weary sigh escaped her lips. The peace of the dinner vanished, replaced by the grim reality of their next move.

“I can’t let this city breed monster zombies,” Joanna said quietly, her eyes reflecting the distant, cold night. “Tech Valley turned against humanity. They are experimenting on human killing machines, and if we don’t sever the head of this snake right now, the entire sector will be overrun.”

Briggs let out a cold huff, crossing his arms as a competitive smirk played on his lips. “So you are going to have fun and leave me behind?”

Joanna turned back to him, her expression softening into a small, wry smile. “It’s not a party, Briggs. I need

rove fast and silent. Your roaring flames aren’t exactly low-profile.”

“I can be quiet when I want to be,” Briggs countered, though they both knew his favorite solution to any problem was a giant fireball. Still, the underlying concern in his eyes was real. He didn’t like the idea of her slipping into a hostile, unmapped enemy stronghold without backup, especially after what they had discovered in the subway tunnels.

Rachel spoke up, her voice quiet but resolute through the mental link. At least take a few of us with you.

Joanna’s heart softened. Her team never ceased to surprise her. No matter how dangerous or insane the mission sounded, they were always ready to stand right beside her.

Julian, who had been finishing up the dishes in the kitchen, walked forward into the living room while wiping his hands on a towel. “What is this I hear about you leaving?”

Joanna looked around at the gathered faces and decided to be entirely transparent. “Yeah. I am going to burn the city down.”

She braced herself, fully expecting shock, hesitation, or even disgust at the sheer extremity of her plan. Instead, everyone simply nodded in grim satisfaction.

“Yeah, there is no way we can let those monsters loose,” Julian said, his eyes flashing with agreement.

Jolie nodded eagerly, her usual happy face taking on a fiercely practical expression. “That’s right! And they don’t even have cores! All work and no reward. What’s the point of fighting them?”

The sheer practicality of Jolie’s complaint broke the heavy tension. Joanna let out a genuine, clear laugh, the warmth of her team completely dispelling the chill of the apocalypse for a brief moment.

Caleb walked into the living room just as Joanna was asking for a few volunteers. He held a piece of paper, his eyes dark with fatigue from his long meditation.

Briggs scoffed, shaking his head. “You mention fire and don’t bring me? Yeah, not happening!”

Even Major Levi stepped forward, his posture straight. “I can go with you, boss. My men can handle the gate.”

Joanna paused, looking over the eager faces. She shook her head firmly. “Briggs and Rachel, you can come. The rest stay here and sleep. You all will have heavy driving duty tomorrow.”

Caleb tapped his fingers against the paper and pushed the mind link open for the strike team. He sent three distinct locations directly into their minds. These were the coordinates where the heaviest activity of aberrant zombies and the Blood Fang faction intersected.

Caleb checked his device, sending a quick message over the link. I sent dreams to the civilians to run, so don’t be alarmed if the streets are active. If they listen, they can get out of the city in time.
