Chapter 252 The Zombie Guards

heavy winter snow ceased the moment Joanna folded reality, the swirling white of the apocalypse giving way to the oppressive silence of the city’s southern district. Before the world ended, this had been a bustling commercial hub, a labyrinth of glass and steel business offices. Now, the towering high-rises loomed like skeletal giants in the dark.

Joanna materialized inside the lobby of an old accounting firm, her boots crunching softly on the debris- littered floor. Cracked glass, the lingering stench of old death, and a freezing dampness clung to the abandoned structure. Immediately, she reached into her pocket dimension and pulled Rachel out onto the cracked tile beside her.

“Is anyone here?” Joanna whispered, her voice barely carrying over the faint whistle of the wind outside.

“Yeah, I have about fifty or so low level zombies on the few floors above.” RJ said.

Joanna shrugged, her hands resting casually near her waist. “Let’s clear them up.”

“Wait,” RJ said, stepping forward. “Let me try something.”

She closed her eyes, drawing a deep breath of the freezing, damp air.

Before RJ could even finish opening her eyes, the shuffling and dragging noises from the stairwell grew louder, a heavy chorus of decay echoing into the frozen lobby. Joanna didn’t hesitate. With a swift flick of her wrist, she reached into her pocket dimension and brought out Briggs, the towering, battle-hardened enforcer materializing smoothly onto the cracked tile beside them.

RJ’s eyes snapped open, a confident grin spreading across her face. “Boss,” she said, glancing at Joanna, “let’s have them guard the lobby for us.”

Joanna lifted her brows in surprise, but an amused smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She stepped back, gesturing for RJ and Briggs to take the lead.

Briggs sized up the approaching horde of fifty frozen dead, completely unbothered by the sheer numbers. He adjusted his heavy gear, looked toward the stairs, and spoke in an ice-cold, authoritative tone that completely contradicted the ridiculousness of his words: “Listen up, you brainless icicles. Shift’s started. No one gets past this lobby without a visitor’s badge, or I’m docking your pay.”

Joanna laughed out loud, shaking her head at the giant enforcer. “Jeesh, Sparky, you’re a slave driver.”

Briggs didn’t miss a beat. He simply smirked, keeping his eyes locked on the stairwell,

The heavy door at the top of the landing groaned under sudden weight, and the first of the frozen zombies began filing into the lobby. They descended the stairs in an awkward, jerky parade of decay, their stiffened joints popping like frozen twigs with every step. Ice crystals clung to their hollow cheeks and tattered

clothes, glinting under the pale light filtering through the cracked high-rise windows. Frost coated their dead, milky eyes, making them look less like apex predators and more like a collection of macabre, wind-up dolls. They stumbled over the debris, bumping into one another and shuffling into a ragged line as they hit the cracked tile floor.

Joanna crossed her arms, looking on at the absolute circus unfolding in front of her. “Is it me,” she muttered, “or do they look incredibly confused?”

RJ let out a bright laugh, her eyes glowing faintly with the effort of her mental hold on them. “They absolutely want to bite you, Boss, but they just can’t figure out why their legs won’t let them.”

To drive the point home, Briggs raised a hand and casually shot a tiny flame ball straight at a leading zombie’s face. The miniature fireball popped harmlessly against its frozen nose, melting a patch of frost and causing the creature to let out a frustrated, sputtering hiss. Yet, instead of lunging, the zombie simply turned on its heel, completely bound by the mental commands.

The fifty frozen dead continued to wander a strict, aimless perimeter around the entrance, setting up a bizarre but highly effective defensive wall.

Joanna didn’t wait around to watch the zombies finish their patrol. Grabbing both RJ and Briggs by the shoulders, she folded reality. The lobby vanished in a blur of motion. With three dizzying, consecutive spatial jumps, the air pressure dropped rapidly, and the smell of old dust was replaced by the biting, freezing wind of the upper atmosphere.

They materialized on the snow-dusted gravel of the high-rise roof.

Joanna immediately reached into her pocket dimension, pulled out a heavy pair of military binoculars with digital night vision, and slapped them into Briggs’s massive hand. She didn’t let him crack another joke, turning her sharp gaze directly to RJ instead.

“Listen,” Joanna said, her voice cutting through the whistling wind as she pointed a gloved finger into the dark expanse of the southern district. “Four blocks north is the largest concentration of Blood Fang members. They’ve got a heavy setup there.”
