Chapter 261 Glaciers Ice Palace

The rest of the day passed by quietly, the open highway clear thanks to the work they had done clearing the road a few days ago when they first drove toward Tech Valley.
As the miles rolled by, Julian glanced sideways at Joanna. A dark mood was visibly settling over her the closer they got to Dillon. Her hometown was just as suffocating and oppressive now as it had been before the apocalypse, bringing back a flood of heavy memories.
And then, there was Glacier.
Joanna stared out at the passing frozen wasteland, mentally bracing herself. She kept repeating the same practical mantra over and over in her head: make him a friend. She didn’t have to like him, but she needed to use him for the future. Building multiple layers of defense for her team meant tolerating psycho hotheads, and Glacier was at the top of that list.
As they neared Dillon, Julian kept his eyes on the road and asked Caleb where Glacier was.
Before Caleb could answer, Joanna pointed a few blocks ahead through the frosted windshield. “He is there.”
Even in the dead of winter, the hotel ahead was a beautiful, striking sight to behold. It was completely encased in a thick, crystalline layer of ice that caught the pale daylight. The surrounding streets were a defensive nightmare; giant, jagged icicles jutted straight up from the frozen ground like a field of spikes. Several wandering zombies had been brutally impaled on them, left frozen solid in mid-air.
While the rest of the city held only a small amount of scattered snow, this hotel was entirely consumed by frost. It was an unmistakable, imposing display of raw power-the definitive handiwork of Glacier.
Joanna looked up at the towering ice-encased fortress, a look of profound disbelief crossing her face. “Is this grand display only a level two power?”
Caleb gulped nervously and nodded.
Joanna let out a heavy groan, leaning her head back against the seat before muttering under her breath, “Sometimes, I hate you, Dreamweaver.”
From the back row of the car, Caleb reached forward and patted her shoulder in soft, silent commiseration. He knew exactly what she was thinking: if Glacier was this dangerously powerful at just level two, dealing with him was going to be an absolute nightmare if she made the wrong move.
“Jake, take Caleb and the convoy to the edge of town,” Joanna ordered. “The rest of the group will meet you there. If trouble finds you, just leave town. Kailee-go with them. I need you two to keep the convoy safe.”
Jake nodded sharply. “Understood. We’ll set up a perimeter at the boundary line.”
Kailee unbuckled, focusing her wind senses. “We’ve got this, boss. Stay safe in that ice box.”
Before Caleb could step out of the vehicle, his eyes fluttered and closed as a sudden psychic flash gripped him. He leaned forward toward Joanna, his voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper.
“Joanna, to uncover the rat, you need to tell Glacier the crate is a fake,” Caleb warned, his eyes snapping open. “Tell him it’s all part of the plan to lure him there.”

Joanna memorized the specific instructions before Caleb pulled back, shook off the trance, and hurried out to join Jake and Kailee. The heavy engines of the convoy roared to life, rolling away down the icy street and
aving Joanna with her core team outside the frozen fortress.
As they walked past the towering ice spikes, the team tensed. Behind Joanna, Jolie, RJ, Briggs, and Julian kept their hands close to their weapons, their eyes scanning the frozen defensive field.
As they approached the entrance, two men stepped out from the darkened hotel lobby, holding heavy bats.
“Stop!” one of them yelled, his breath pluming in the freezing air. “This is Glacier’s domain, and you only enter by invitation.”
Joanna looked away from them, completely unconcerned by the weapons. “Tell Glacier the demoness is here to speak with him.”
The guards shared a panicked look, the bats suddenly lowering as the terrifying title registered.
One guard turned immediately and went back into the hotel. Five minutes later he came back. “Follow me.”
She used her mental text to ask Caleb for details on the drop. He texts back what he knows including a childhood friend of Glacier’s named Kim. Then he pulls a classic Caleb and texts the last line: If you see flowers, grab Glacier and run! Does he do this on purpose just to annoy me?
