Glacier stared at Joanna, his face darkening like a storm rolling over a tundra. For a long, suffocating moment, the only sound was the crackle of the fire barrels.

“You know, since our last meeting, I’ve heard many stories about you and your crew,” Glacier said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly register. He leaned forward, resting his palms flat on the makeshift desk. “But for you to come in here and say that? It makes me feel like you are watching me. And the last idiot who watched me froze in a puddle of his own blood.”

“I am telling you the truth,” Joanna countered, her voice remaining steady despite the pressure.

“Impossible,” Glacier spit out. “You are a liar.”

With clenched teeth, he slammed his fist onto the table. The force of the blow shattered the wooden surface, sending sharp ice crystals flying from his knuckles like shrapnel.

The sudden burst of cold air hit Joanna’s face. Watching him breathe heavily through his nose, she felt a pang of profound irritation. She genuinely wondered if she should just kill him right now and save herself the headache of this entire operation. It would certainly make the rest of her evening a lot quieter.

Before she could act on the thought, the room’s temperature plummeted, instantly killing the heat from the burning metal barrels. A sharp, cracking sound echoed through the grand ballroom as thick frost rapidly spread across the floor, creeping out from Glacier’s boots and racing directly toward Joanna and her crew.

“The crates you are getting tonight are fake,” Joanna said, her voice cutting through the localized blizzard creeping across the floor. She didn’t flinch as the frost licked at the toes of her boots. “The medicine vials are saline, not antibiotics. The packets of rations are filled with sawdust. The entire shipment is a prop, meant for nothing more than to lure you outside where you will be completely vulnerable.”

Glacier stared hard at her, his breathing heavy, ice still clinging to his knuckles. The temperature in the ballroom was near freezing, but he remained utterly unmoving, a statue of pure malice.

“The person bringing me those crates,” Glacier growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register, “is a hell of a lot more trustworthy than you.”

Behind Joanna, Briggs grew tired of the posturing. He flexed his shoulders, and a sudden, violent wave of heat erupted from his skin. Bright orange flames danced along his forearms, instantly pushing back the frost on the floor and sending a massive plume of steam hissing into the air as the room rapidly warmed back up.

Before the display could trigger a full-scale firefight with Glacier’s twelve armed men, Joanna raised a calm, steady hand, silently signaling Briggs to hold. Her eyes never left Glacier’s.

“Kim only wants you to meet her in that warehouse for a dinner because her crew means to kill you and take over this entire part of town,” Joanna stated flatly. She took a single, deliberate step forward, narrowing the distance between them. “If you don’t believe me, take me with you. Keep me close. If I am wrong, you can kill me yourself.”

A sharp, violent crackle echoed through the tense silence. Behind her, Julian flexed his hands, arcs of bright blue electricity snapping between his fingers in a dangerous display of protest. He clearly hated the idea of her offering herself up as a hostage, but Joanna kept her focus locked entirely on Glacier, waiting to see if the warlord would take the bait.

Glacier’s frown deepened. After a tense beat, he growled, “Fine. But your crew stays. And you come

med.” Joanna gave a single nod. They moved toward the exit as one, leaving her team standing watchful in the dim lobby.

Joanna climbed into the front jeep, sliding into the seat flanked by Glacier and three of his heavily armed guards. Through the rearview mirror, she watched the rest of his men pile into the trailing vehicle, the doors slamming shut against the bitter cold. The engines roared, tires crunching over the packed ice as the small convoy rolled out into the dark, desolate-streets.

For a long time, the only sound inside the cabin was the low rumble of the engine and the heater blasting stale air. Glacier turned his head, his sharp, icy gaze fixing on her profile.

“Why don’t you tell me what you are after, Demoness?” he asked. His voice was soft, almost coaxing, but Joanna wasn’t fooled for a second. Underneath the calm facade, he was still the same erratic hothead he had always been.

Joanna let out a slow, deliberate sigh before she replied. “Honestly, I would have killed you a long time ago because you are such a hothead. But I want you to fight this apocalypse. I want you to fulfill your destiny.” She finally turned her head, meeting his gaze with a cold, unyielding stare of her own. “But your arrogance has only grown since we last met, Glacier. You think you are invincible.”

She turned her eyes back to the window, watching the skeletal silhouettes of ruined buildings pass by under the bleak night sky. “But you are not. I will tell you what I really want… after this is all over.”

Glacier stared hard at her, trying to read the blank spaces of her expression, but Joanna remained totally unconcerned by his scrutiny. He huffed, a plume of vapor leaving his lips, and leaned back against his seat.

“You know, Kimmy and I grew up together,” Glacier muttered, his tone hardening. “She is the only one left alive that I trust. So I hope you are prepared to die.”
