Kimmy and Glacier paid no attention to the shadows, fully engrossed in their conversation. She strung him along effortlessly, batting her eyelashes and pouting, while Glacier soaked it up like a total simp.

With a soft smile, Glacier motioned for two of his guards to step forward. They carried a heavy crate packed to the brim with assault rifles, grenades, and high-tier weapons. Kimmy squealed in delight, her eyes flashing with greed.

“Now, where is the medicine?” Glacier asked, his voice softening. “My team desperately needs those vials.”

Kimmy whined, crossing her arms before reluctantly signaling her men to bring out a much smaller, pathetic-looking crate. When they set it down, Glacier opened the lid and paused. He reached in, picking up what was supposed to be a heavy bag of grain. Kimmy visibly stiffened, a flash of nervousness crossing her pretty face.

Ignoring her sudden protests, Glacier ripped the bag open. Joanna watched from the dark as the contents spilled out. It wasn’t grain. It was sawdust.

“Glenn, I swear I had no idea!” Kimmy gasped, instantly turning on the waterworks. “This must have been my father’s doing! He handles the logistics. I’ll fix this right away, honey bunny, I promise!”

She scrambled up from the table and rushed toward the back wall. With a sharp tug, she pulled down a hanging sheet, revealing a hidden table and her purse with a satellite phone. She grabbed the receiver, frantically pretending to dial a number to resolve the issue.

But as Joanna’s eyes followed Kimmy’s movement, they landed on something else near the hidden alcove. A vase of winter lilies.

Caleb’s frantic warning flared in her mind: If you see flowers, grab Glacier and run!

Without a second thought, Joanna activated her ability. She materialized beside Glacier in a flash of light, grabbed him by the front of his coat, and hurled his heavy frame fifty feet across the warehouse toward the exit. A split second later, the darkness above erupted with muzzle flashes as a hail of bullets rained down from the second-floor walkway, shredding the dinner table to splinters.

Glacier hit the floor near the entrance, entirely frozen in shock, staring back at the woman he had trusted.

“Kill him, you idiots!” Kimmy shrieked, her sweet voice replaced by a grating, murderous howl. “Kill them all!”

Before the shooters could adjust their aim, Joanna snatched the crate of heavy weapons Glacier had brought. She pocketed it into her spatial storage so quickly that the guards didn’t even notice it vanish. Then, she teleported right back to Glacier’s side. She grabbed him by the collar, hoisting the massive warlord into the air as effortlessly as if he were a newborn kitten, and bolted out into the freezing night.

She threw him violently into the passenger side of the idling jeep, leaped into the driver’s seat, and slammed her foot onto the accelerator. The tires shrieked against the packed ice, throwing up a cloud of frozen slush as the vehicle roared away.

Glancing in her rearview mirror, Joanna saw Drew running out into the snow, waving his arms frantically in a desperate bid to stop them. Behind him, Glacier’s surviving guards scrambled out of the warehouse and piled into the second jeep to give chase.

Joanna didn’t care. She floored the gas, disappearing into the dark, desolate streets of Dillon, leaving the

haes far behind.

Joanna kept her eyes locked on the treacherous, icy road ahead, her hands steady on the steering wheel as the jeep tore through the dark streets of Dillon. Closing her eyes for a split second, she tapped into her mental network and broadcasted a crisp message to her team.

Trap sprung. I have Glacier. Heading back to the hotel now. Be there in 10 minutes.

Julian’s mental response was instantaneous, practically buzzing with a mix of irritation and intense relief. Copy that. We are waiting and will have a car ready. If that second jeep comes anywhere near us, we’re taking it off the road.

Joanna cut the connection and glanced sideways. Glacier sat slumped in the passenger seat, his imposing frame looking uncharacteristically small. He stared blankly out the frost-covered window, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped. The betrayal had clearly shattered his reality, stripping away the fierce, untouchable warlord facade and leaving behind a stunned, humiliated man.

“So….” Joanna sighed, her voice dripping with effortless sarcasm as she navigated a sharp turn. “… Honey bunny… you trust me now?”

Glacier flinched at the nickname, a deep, ugly flush rising on his neck despite the freezing air filtering through the cabin. He didn’t look at her. Instead, he let out a low, ragged breath that misted heavily against the dashboard.

“She grew up with me,” he muttered, his voice hollow, stripped of all its previous booming arrogance. “Her father… we were supposed to align our districts. Drew swore the logistics were secure.”

“Drew is an opportunist who uses anyone he can to climb the ladder,” Joanna stated flatly, flooring the gas as she checked the rearview mirror. The headlights of the second jeep were still visible in the distance, struggling to keep pace with her erratic, high-speed driving. “And Kimmy just played you like a cheap fiddle. You let your ego blind you, Glenn. You thought because you hit Level 2, you were king of the world and everyone was just going to fall in line.”

Glacier winced at his real name, finally turning his head to glare at her, though the fire in his icy eyes was entirely gone. “You knew. You and your whole team knew exactly what they were planning,”

“Because we actually pay attention,” Joanna countered smoothly. “Instead of sitting on a throne of ice counting your own blessings, we’re trying to make sure humanity actually survives what’s coming. You’re a powerhouse, Glacier. But a powerhouse with a blind spot that large is just a giant target.”

He went quiet again, looking down at his hands. He flexed his fingers, a few weak ice crystals sparking across his knuckles before fading away into nothing. The realization that he had almost been executed by his childhood friend-and saved by the very woman he had threatened to turn into a corpse-was a bitter pill to swallow.

“My weapons,” Glacier muttered suddenly, realizing the heavy crate was gone. “They took the rifles. If they have those-”

“Relax,” Joanna interrupted, a small, knowing smirk playing on her lips. “I pocketed your toys before we left. They’re safe in my storage space.”
