The jeep slammed to a halt outside the hotel entrance, tires kicking up fresh snow. Before the engine could even cut out, Glacier threw his door open and lunged out into the freezing air.
“The men in that second jeep!” Glacier barked at Joanna’s crew, his voice cracked with panic and residual adrenaline. “They were all handpicked by Drew! I don’t trust a single one of them!”
Without waiting for a response, he bolted past Julian and Briggs, running straight through the front doors of his hotel. “Get everyone up!” he roared at the lobby guards, his booming voice echoing up the frozen stairwell. “We need to be ready for a fight in five minutes! Move!”
The guards didn’t hesitate, scrambling upstairs to rouse the rest of his forces.
Glacier turned back around, breathing heavily as he stepped out onto the hotel threshold to face Joanna. Her crew stood tight around her, Julian already moving to her side to check her for injuries, but Joanna just kept her cool gaze on the disgraced warlord. With a lazy wave of her hand, the heavy crate of assault rifles and grenades materialized out of thin air, dropping onto the snow with a heavy thud.
Glacier froze, his jaw practically dropping. “You… Do you have a spatial storage container? How many abilities do you even have?”
Joanna didn’t answer. Instead, she waved her hand again. A second, smaller crate materialized beside the first, packed tight with actual antibiotics, pain medications, and flu vaccines. Beside it, four heavy sacks of real grain and preserved food settled into the snow.
“If you ever think to double-cross me, Honey Bunny, know that I will kill you myself,” Joanna warned him, her voice quiet but carrying a terrifying weight. “But this should help your people get through the winter. And since you’re listening now, I want to give you my request.”
Glacier looked at the mountain of life-saving medical supplies and real food, then back up at her. The utter humiliation from earlier transformed into a profound, solemn respect. He stood straight and nodded, speaking in a clear, ringing voice.
“Name it,” Glacier said. The words left his lips like a sacred vow.
Joanna smirked, thoroughly satisfied with his response. “You need to send word to me in Evercrest the exact moment anyone from the Nightshade base comes into town. I don’t have time to give you the specifics right now, but do not trust them.”
She stepped closer, the cold wind whipping her hair across her face. “The same way I knew you were going to be stabbed in the back tonight is the same way I know about them. They mean to capture ability users like you and me to run experiments on. Whatever you do, don’t tell them a single thing about Evercrest. Hold them off, pretend to play along, and get word to me immediately.”
She glanced down at the food and medicine. “If you need to trade for more of these supplies down the line, we can always work something out.”
Glenn stared at her, the sheer weight of what she had just done finally sinking in. This woman had not only saved his life, but she had effortlessly handed over a fortune in pristine medical supplies and real food- items that no one in the apocalypse could lay their hands on unless they were part of the extreme elite.
He let out a shaky, humbled breath. “I’ll remember,” he said, his voice deadly serious. Then, a low chuckle

escaped him as he glanced down the dark street. “You guys should get going. I am about to wage a war on the southern district.”
spoke, that familiar, unhinged, psycho vibe crept back into his expression, his eyes gleaming with the manic thrill of upcoming bloodshed. Joanna’s look turned complicated as she stared at him. He really is crazy, she thought, shaking her head in a mix of amusement and exasperation. She gave him a dismissive wave, turned on her heel, and climbed into the vehicle with her core team.
They roared away from the hotel, navigating the treacherous streets until they finally reached the dark expanse of the main highway. Waiting for them off the side of the road was the rest of their convoy. The vehicles sat like silent shadows, already getting lightly dusted with fresh snow.
Joanna jumped out to reunite with Caleb, Jake, and Kailee. The moment she stepped into view, Caleb crossed his arms, wearing a thoroughly insufferable, smug grin. “I told you so,” he gloated.
Before he could utter another word, Julian flicked his wrist. A sharp, crackling arc of blue electricity snapped violently against the frozen asphalt right next to Caleb’s boots.
“Ah!” Caleb screamed, leaping back and swatting at the air as if he’d been set on fire.
Joanna rolled her eyes at the bickering. “Want to get going? In a few days, we need to be safely tucked away in Evercrest before the main snow hits. After that, we’re looking at months of brutal winter conditions.”
Jake nodded firmly, turning to address the gathered team. “Let’s take turns resting in the RV so everyone can get some sleep. It’s about a six-hour drive back to our base in Westridge.”
“I can’t wait to check in with Will,” Kailee spoke up, her face softening with a warm smile. “I just hope he’s actually been taking care of himself while we’ve been gone.”
Joanna smiled softly at her friend’s enthusiasm. Reaching into her spatial storage, she waved her hand and pulled out the massive, armored RV, letting it settle heavily onto the snowy road, ready for the long journey home.
The rest of the night passed in peace. There were the occasional frozen zombie popsicles lingering by the roadsides, and they even had to outrun a feral pack of mutated dogs pacing the convoy, but Joanna barely registered the hazards. She was genuinely happy. Every mile down the highway brought them one step closer to Evercrest, and that was all that mattered.
