The roaring engine of The Beast vibrated through the floorboards as Joanna shifted into drive, leaving Fletcher’s territory behind. The suffocating weight of Brandon’s obsessive gaze was finally gone, replaced by the steady hum of her armored vehicle as they drove through the fading night.

The morning sun finally broke over the horizon, casting a bright, golden glow across the frozen, snow- covered landscape. Up ahead, the familiar perimeter of her property came into view.

As Joanna pulled the massive vehicle onto the grounds, she saw Will already standing there waiting for them. Beside him stood Raven and Titan, along with Ryan, Uncle Nate, and Willow.

The moment The Beast came to a halt, everyone stepped out into the crisp morning air. The courtyard instantly filled with relieved smiles and warm, tight hugs as the crew reunited. It was good to be back.

“Did Levi come back yet?” Joanna asked Will as they walked briskly across the packed snow of the courtyard.

“Yeah,” Will replied, matching her stride. “They are already settled in. Virginia and Noah managed to squeeze them into the far wall of shipping containers.”

“Good,” Joanna said, nodding with satisfaction. One less thing to worry about.

She led the group toward the large, reinforced outside tent that served as their central command post. The moment she pulled back the heavy canvas flap and stepped inside, the rich, deep aroma of fresh brew hit her, instantly cutting through the bitter morning chill. Danielle and Josiah were already stationed by the burners, busy pouring steaming, hot cups of coffee into metal mugs. Inside the rest of the group were already making plates ready to enjoy a meal together after being apart.

The long tactical table in the center of the tent had been completely transformed, buried under a massive spread of food. It held heaping plates of crispy bacon strips, fluffy scrambled eggs, and golden buttermilk pancakes stacked high. Sizzling pork sausages sat alongside baskets of toasted sourdough bread, while warm, glazed cinnamon rolls and platters of fresh sliced fruit took up the remaining space.

Joanna looked at the incredible feast, then turned back to her crew who was trying to hide their drool, and she shot everyone a grin.

“We can leave Levi and his crew alone to rest. Everyone else, dig in!” Julian pushed her to sit down and went to make her plate. She watched everyone piling plates with hot food and let out a sigh of contentment.

Will handed her a steaming cup of coffee before sitting down across from her. He had already eaten breakfast earlier, but he still enjoyed another cup.

Everyone sat down around the table to eat. Julian quietly slid a plate in front of Joanna, piled high with all lof her favorites.

“Thank you, Julian,” Joanna said softly. Her heart warmed at his thoughtfulness.

Will spoke up, breaking the comfortable silence. “Boss, while you were away, we had a huge increase in awakenings.”

Joanna looked up, her fork pausing. “Great news!”

Briggs leaned forward, asking what specific powers the camp had gained. Will smiled, but before he could

answer, Willow spoke up from her seat next to Nana.

ot plant abilities!” the young girl said proudly, a bright spark in her eyes.

Joanna smiled warmly at Willow. When they first met back in Aurora, Willow was a hollowed-out shell, having lost her parents right in front of her eyes. But looking at her now, Joanna saw a completely different girl. Willow looked much healthier, her cheeks full of color, and the terrified look that used to haunt her eyes was entirely gone.

Jolie lit up. “That is wonderful news, Willow.”

Willow paused, looking over at her with a humbler expression. “I can’t do what you can do though, Jolie. I can only grow plants that are in the ground.”

She pointed to a potted plant sitting on a table in the back of the room. It was a beautiful, thriving rose bush. While the group had been away, Willow had managed to scavenge a few crates of viable seeds alongside Will when they went scouting through Westridge.

Will added, “We have multiple users with water, earth, metal, fire, and even an ice type user! Oh, and Michelle from Pharmatec… she has a healing ability. She can’t heal the infected, but she patched up several of my men who were injured.”

Joanna’s brows lifted up in surprise. “Whoa,” she said. “A healer is pretty rare!”

Everyone around the table nodded in agreement.

Allen spoke up, gesturing to his chest. “I was knocked back into a brick wall when a level 2 zombie surprised me. I even broke a few ribs, but Michelle patched me up in only a minute.”

Will continued, “Everyone with abilities is so eager to level up. They all beg to come into town just to get zombie cores. The surrounding farms were cleared out a long time ago.”
