“Lo is a lot better,” Uncle Nate answered, a look of relief crossing his face. “He is no longer spacing out like he used to. You should talk to Warren and Michelle though. Leo and his aunt are always with them these days.”
Joanna nodded, making a mental note. “I will try to check in once we get to Evercrest.”
She looked around the table, her expression turning serious as she gestured to the maps and supply logs. “Honestly, we have a massive undertaking ahead of us,” Joanna spoke, her voice carrying the weight of the upcoming journey. “I only prepped for my team and I there. We are going to have to prepare for the blizzards, or the base won’t survive.”
Will spoke up. “Boss, we had to leave a lot of supplies in Westridge because we just couldn’t grab the stee and wood there. But we did get tons of concrete, nails and tools.”
Joanna replied, “That is fine. I will hop over there tonight and clear it out.”
She got up and had Will lead the way to the back of the shipping containers on the outside of the perimeter. Her eyes lit up. Close to 50 massive piles of supplies sat there covered by plastic sheets. With a wave, everything started disappearing into her storage space. As it was put inside her warehouse, her mind took stock of everything she just got. This was a lot of supplies, even including various amounts of propane tanks and insulation.
She wiped her hands and turned around. “Ok, I am going for a nap and will leave this afternoon to get the supplies. We are leaving first thing tomorrow morning.”
Will called out, scratching his head a little. “Boss, when you go, be careful. There are large amounts of zombies that appear out of nowhere. Whenever it happened, we left and came back another day.”
Jolie laughed and pointed at him. “Are you sure they weren’t attracted to you, Will? You are the zombie pied piper after all.”
Will mumbled, “I don’t know if it was me, but it was strange. Just be careful, Boss!”
Joanna waved him off. He really was a zombie magnet, but maybe she would take a few people with her. She looked back at her team. “Anyone wants to come inside the space with me?”
Her whole team shot their hands up. “Yeah, Boss! Take me too!”
She waved Will on, and Briggs said he would work on organizing the teams for moving them to Evercrest. She told him to text her if anything happened. Watching them walk away, she grabbed all her people and brought them into her space.
Once inside, Joanna saw everyone take off chatting. Before heading out with the others, Julian walked over and wrapped Joanna in a warm, comforting hug. He pulled back with a smile, telling her he was going to absorb cores and soak in the spring. A few of the others wanted to nap, just like her.
Joanna walked upstairs into the villa. The moment she saw her bed, she knew she just wanted to sleep. Knowing she had a secure base and her loyal team nearby, all the built-up tension finally melted away. She changed clothes into comfortable loungewear and climbed into bed. Within minutes, she drifted off into a deep slumber.

Late afternoon, everyone was up and ready to go. Joanna had broken through to level 4 in strength after absorbing cores for the last hour. The problem was zombie cores were only level 1-2 which meant it took more cores and time to get higher in level. Still, her strength now could crush a small horde by itself.
Instead of taking a large squad, Joanna decided to bring a gathering team. She gathered Jake with his metal superpower, Jolie with her plant power, Julian with his rare electricity power, and Allen with his earth power. Once everyone was focused, Joanna activated her teleport ability, warping the five of them directly into Westridge.
They materialized near the edge of the north side of town, the afternoon light rapidly fading into an eerie dusk. As they approached the old steel depot, the shadows shifted violently. Just as Will had warned, a massive pack of infected poured out from the broken alleyways, catching their scent and closing in fast
Joanna leaped forward, her teleportation power carrying her and her team effortlessly up onto the roof of the steel mill. They looked down from the high vantage point at the writhing mass of infected half a block
away.
As she watched the horde move, a chill went down her spine. The zombies weren’t just wandering or mindlessly running toward them. They were pivoting in perfect sync, shifting formations like a disciplined army responding to an unseen commander.
“Something is strange,” Joanna said, her eyes narrowing as she tracked the eerie, coordinated movements. “Don’t they look like they are being controlled?”
Julian stepped up beside her, sparks of electricity crackling faintly at his fingertips as his brow furrowed. “You’re right. Mindless infected don’t flank a building like that.”
