Rafe dangled over the abyss, his choked whimpers swallowed by the wind. Beneath him, Michael crawled through the shattered marble, coughing up blood, while Bianca clutched her ruined wrist, her face twisted in a mixture of agony and deep-seated entitlement.

Desperation finally overrode their terror. With a ragged scream, Bianca used her left hand to summon a desperate, jagged shard of ice from the ambient moisture, lunging at Joanna’s back. At the same moment, Michael roared, forcing his broken knee to stand as he swung a heavy, strength-infused fist armed squarely at her ribs.

Joanna didn’t even look back.

With blinding speed, she dropped Rafe onto the floor and spun. She caught Michael’s incoming fist in her bare palm, the shockwave of the impact rattling the remaining glass windows. With a cold smile, she squeezed. The bones in Michael’s hand crunched into dust under her absolute, overwhelming strength, sending him collapsing to his remaining good knee, screaming. Before Bianca’s ice spike could even reach her, Joanna’s free hand snapped out, grabbing Bianca by the throat. She lifted her effortlessly and slammed her body directly on top of Michael, pinning both siblings to the floor under a heavy, suffocating pressure that made it clear they were entirely outmatched.

“You thought you were the apex predators here,” Joanna whispered, looking down at the broken trio. “You’re just spoiled children playing with matches.”

Behind them, the sounds of combat in the corridors finally died down. The remaining twenty-five ability users, thoroughly defeated by Briggs’s searing walls of fire and Kailee’s concussive air pulses, stumbled down the stairwell in a dazed, compliant line. They were stripped of their weapons and forced toward the lower levels, thoroughly tied up and left for Fletcher’s crew to deal with.

Turning her attention to the back of the penthouse, Joanna kicked open a set of reinforced double doors, revealing a massive hidden vault. Inside sat several heavily loaded pallets of high-grade military supplies, medical packs, and pristine rations. Silently, Joanna extended her hand. A dark ripple expanded from her palm, and within seconds, the space warped as she absorbed every single pallet directly into her pocket storage dimension.

As the team began to regroup and head toward the exit, Joanna wiped a smear of dust from her brow, a sudden thought striking her. She turned to her telepath. “RJ, I thought we would see mutated dogs up here? Caleb’s text said the area was crawling with level-twos.”

RJ closed her eyes for a brief second, expanding her mental radar across the entire skyscraper. She shook her head, looking genuinely puzzled. “I can’t sense a single one, Boss. The air is completely clear of animal minds.”

Joanna frowned, a lingering sense of mystery hanging over the empty building. “Strange. Let’s get down there.”

Instead of making everyone walk down twenty-four flights of stairs, Joanna grabbed Julian’s hand and extended her energy to the rest of the strike team. With a sharp distortion of space, she teleported the entire group out of the penthouse, reappearing instantly in the gravel lot outside.

The cool night air hit them immediately. In the center of the lot, the defeated twenty-five enemy ability users were already neatly lined up on their knees, completely bound by Jolie’s thick, thorny green vines. Allen stood guard with his arms crossed, while eleven-year-old Raven sat on the bumper of the Beast,

swinging her legs and scratching Titan behind the ears. The corgi wagged his stubby tail, looking entirely unbothered by the apocalypse.

The celebratory hum in the gravel lot died instantly as a ragged, terrified scream cut through the cool night

air.

Down the dark, ruined avenue, the frantic slapping of combat boots against asphalt echoed off the abandoned storefronts. Three of Fletcher’s men burst through the shadows, running blindly toward the glowing headlights of the Beast. They were entirely unraveled by fear. Their tactical gear was shredded and dark, hot blood pooled through deep, jagged gouges in their armor. One man stumbled, his breath rattling in his chest as he clutched a horrific, bleeding bite wound on his forearm.

“Demoness!” the lead soldier gasped, collapsing to his knees in front of Joanna, his eyes wide, bloodsho and filled with absolute horror. “Demoness, you have to help us! The place… the sector Brandon took usto.. it’s being overrun!”

Joanna stepped forward, her face instantly hardening. “Calm down. What happened?”

“Dogs!” another soldier shrieked, looking back over his shoulder as if the devils themselves were on his heels. “A whole pack of them-level-two mutated monsters! They came out of the walls, out of the sewers! They’re tearing everyone apart. Some of our men are already dead… ripped to shreds. Fletcher sent us to find you. He’s begging for your help, Boss!”

The air grew heavy as the gravity of the situation sank in. RJ’s eyes snapped open, a sudden look of shock on her face. “That’s why I couldn’t sense them from the skyscraper,” she muttered sharply to Joanna. “They weren’t near our building at all. They were lying in wait, blocking Fletcher and Brandon’s flank.”

Julian stepped up to Joanna’s side, blue static violently cracking along his knuckles. “Looks like Caleb’s text wasn’t a false alarm after all. The rich kids just used a different door.”

Joanna didn’t hesitate. Her leadership instincts took over like clockwork. She turned back to the three bleeding soldiers, then pointed directly at the twenty-five enemy ability users still bound tightly in Jolie’s thorny vines.

“You three stay right here,” Joanna commanded, her voice ringing out with an iron authority that brooked no argument. “Bandage your wounds, keep your weapons drawn, and guard these prisoners. If any of them so much as twitches, put them down.”

The terrified men nodded frantically, scrambling to set up a perimeter around the captive Billings loyalists.

“Everyone, pack into the Beast now!” Joanna yelled, turning toward her vehicle. She sprinted to the driver’s side, yanking the heavy armored door open and sliding into the driver’s seat.

Julian claimed the shotgun seat next to her, his expression turning into a lethal grin. Behind them, Jake, Jolie, Allen, Briggs, Kailee, RJ, and eleven-year-old Raven scrambled into the spacious, heavily reinforced interior. Titan the corgi scrambled up onto Raven’s lap, his tiny ears pinned back as the gravel around his paws hovered from his shifting gravity control.
