The heavy scent of ozone and burnt fur slowly drifted away as the industrial yard grew quiet. With the threat neutralized, Joanna wasted no time directing the cleanup. She stood alongside Fletcher in the glow of the flashing tactical lights, the sprawling water purification plant and agricultural warehouse safely secured behind them.
Fletcher extended his hand, a look of profound, mutual respect passing between them. “You saved my men tonight, little dove. I don’t forget my debts.” He gestured toward a massive convoy of pallets his men were loading up. “Take this. Consider it a down payment on a long-lasting partnership.” Joanna accepted the crates of high-grade rations and medical gear, absorbing them smoothly into her pocket dimension. As they shook hands, she felt a wave of relief; in a world filled with monsters, Fletcher was going to make an incredibly powerful ally.
A few yards away, Brandon stood in the shadows, his eyes fixed intently on Joanna. A quiet, familiar obsession burned in his chest as he watched her command the room with effortless authority. But as Julian stepped up beside her, wrapping a protective hand around her waist, Brandon’s gaze dropped. He tightened his fists, accepting the bitter truth-he simply wasn’t good enough for a force of nature like the Demoness
Nobody spoke on the drive back. Through the windshield, the compound’s courtyard was still alive despite the hour-lanterns swaying, survivors hauling crates, trucks being loaded for the morning. Joanna let out a slow breath.
“Come on,” Joanna murmured to her core team, her voice sounding dangerously raspy. “Everyone inside.”
With a sharp wave of her hand, she expanded her storage space dimension, warping reality around them. In a flash of light, she pulled Julian, Jake, Jolie, Allen, Briggs, Kailee, RJ, Raven, and Titan out of the physical world and into the massive, hidden sanctuary of her pocket dimension.
The moment the pocket space closed, Joanna’s knees buckled.
The adrenaline had completely evaporated, and the hidden zombie bite on her arm was finally demanding its toll. Her skin flushed a violent, feverish red, and a cold sweat broke out across her forehead as she trembled in Julian’s arms.
“Joanna!” Julian gasped, his usual sarcastic demeanor vanishing into pure panic as he caught her.
“She’s burning up,” RJ said, her telepathic senses instantly picking up the erratic, fighting rhythms of Joanna’s mind. “It’s the bite.”
Julian didn’t hesitate. He lifted her effortlessly and carried her straight toward the steaming geothermal hot springs bubbling at the center of her pocket domain. The water here was rich with ancient, regenerative properties unique to her storage dimension. He gently lowered her into the soothing, mineral-rich heat, letting the water submerge her up to her shoulders.
The effect was almost instantaneous. As the mystical water soaked into her skin, the agonizing heat of the fever began to break. The jagged, dark veins spreading from the bite wound on her arm slowly receded, the pure energy of the spring aggressively purging the infection from her system.
Around her, the team fell into a quiet rhythm-Jolie at the fire with tea, Kailee coaxing the thick steam away with a cool breeze. Julian hadn’t moved an inch, his wet clothes forgotten, his hand steady at her forehead.
Once the fever broke, they carefully pulled her from the spring, wrapped her in thick blankets, and fed her

a warm, hearty broth Allen had prepared. Spoon by spoon, Joanna regained a fraction of her strength, her eyes heavy with a bone-deep fatigue. Surrounded by the fierce loyalty of the family she had fought so hard
protect, Joanna closed her eyes and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, completely safe from the horrors of the world outside.
The morning light filtered softly through the canopy of Joanna’s pocket dimension, casting a warm glow over her bedside. As Joanna opened her heavy eyelids, she found Julian sitting right beside her. He looked incredibly tired, his clothes still slightly damp from the night before, but his eyes were sharp and wide awake the moment she stirred.
“How do you feel?” Julian asked gently, his voice rough with sleep deprivation as he reached out to touch her forehead.
“A lot better,” Joanna replied, offering him a reassuring smile. “Thanks to the waters last night. The feveris completely gone.”
Before Julian could fuss any further, the door clicked open. Kailee stepped into the room, balancing a large tray piled high with a hearty breakfast. She gave Joanna a bright, relieved smile, setting the tray down before quietly slipping back out to give them some space. For the next twenty minutes, Joanna and Julian shared a rare, peaceful moment, eating together and enjoying the quiet safety of the sanctuary they had built.
But as soon as the last plate was cleared, Joanna’s leadership instincts snapped right back into place. She looked at the dark circles under Julian’s eyes and pointed a firm finger at the bed. “You are staying right here in my space,” she ordered, leaving no room for argument. “Get some sleep. That’s an order.”
Julian opened his mouth to protest, but one look at her unyielding expression made him raise his hands in mock defeat and made his way back to his room.
With Julian safely tucked away, Joanna gathered the rest of her inner circle and warped them out of the dimension, stepping out into the crisp, cool morning air of the compound. The courtyard was already a beehive of activity. Briggs, acting as the cold, efficient military commander, immediately took absolute charge of the troops. With the reliable help of Will and Levi, he began organizing the lines of survivors and running final gear checks.
Joanna walked over to eleven-year-old Raven, who was adjusting Titan’s tactical vest. “Raven, we need to coordinate with the scouts,” Joanna said. “Can you tell Dante and the pigeons exactly where they need to fly and meet us?”
Raven burst into a bright laugh, scratching Titan behind the ears. “I already told Dante last night, Boss! He and the whole flock flew out at first light to scout the path ahead and meet us at the destination.”
Joanna smiled, impressed by the kid’s initiative. “Perfect.”
With the path clear, the command went out. Everyone jumped into the massive convoy trucks, doors slamming and engines roaring to life across the lot. Joanna walked through the compound one last time, extending her palms toward the massive shipping containers lining the yard.
With a series of sharp spatial distortions, she absorbed them entirely into her pocket dimension. She didn’t stop at the surface, either; reaching deep with her ability, she targeted the massive underground storage containers, ripping them out of the earth and storing them away until the compound was completely hollowed out.
With the entire base safely packed into her mind, Joanna marched over to the Beast and climbed into the
