While Joanna still stared at Piper exasperated, a chime went off in her head and Will’s voice echoed to the whole group. He could talk to everyone using the mind link from Joanna’s watch.
“Hey everyone! Surprise! I am finally part of the family!”
RJ and Jolie answered back right after each other. “Wow, that’s great news, Will! Welcome to the team!”
Then Julian’s voice came through, using his cold CEO tone. “You take the bedroom in the basement and keep everything clean.”
Will answered back instantly, “Of course!”
Briggs and Jake joked a bit about him finally getting the courage to ask Joanna to join. Hearing them, Joanna smiled, still amazed at how she had made her own family after cutting ties with her toxic one.
The expanded blood contract allowed more members, and Joanna felt good about Will. Even without powers, he ran operations smoothly between Levi’s group and her own. Since outside forces wouldn’t recognize him, he could easily get close to the hidden moles.
Joanna exited her pocket space, telling Kailee and Will she would pull them out in a few hours after their tour. She then walked to the hospital and lab area.
Over the winter, pharmatech experts Michelle and Warren had made clear progress with the virobane bush. They isolated several components that stopped the virus from spreading. Normally, viruses enter host cells, hijack their machinery to replicate, and spread through tissue, blood, or the lymphatic system to infect new cells. The virobane leaves blocked this entire process.
However, they remained unsure about reversing existing cellular damage. While data was lacking, they knew one fact: Leo had successfully shed the virus and returned to normal simply by eating the leaves. Unlocking the secret to his full recovery was their next big challenge.
Throughout the winter, Joanna had hoarded and planted hundreds of these bushes both inside her pocket space and within the lab. Walking in, she saw Warren watering one of the thirty bushes in the room while Michelle took notes.
They looked up and waved at Joanna.
Warren walked over to her with an excited look on his face. “Hey Boss! Glad you came by!” He adjusted his glasses before breaking the news. “We finally got the results back from the group we inoculated with the virobane serum. One hundred percent of their blood samples showed zero reaction against the zombie virus. It is a really good indicator that we have a real vaccine now!”
Joanna nodded in surprise, her mind racing as she processed the weight of Warren’s words. A hundred percent success rate meant they weren’t just looking at a treatment anymore; they had a definitive shield.
“A real vaccine,” Michelle murmured, a rare, emotional smile breaking across her face. “Think about it. Mankind has fought against devastating diseases for hundreds of years-smallpox, polio, rabies. Every single victory was a massive milestone for survival. But this? Winning a war against a virus that literally tears humanity apart? This could be the biggest milestone in human history.”
Warren nodded solemnly, looking at the vibrant violet leaves of the virobane bush beside him. “We’re not

ma looked between the two passionate scientists, her tactical mind immediately shifting to logistics. “Tys is incredible work, both of you. But a vaccine is only as good as our ability to distribute it. How long before we can start producing these vaccines on a large scale?”
Michelle’s smile faded into an expression of heavy clinical reality. Instead of answering right away, she reached over to the laboratory counter, pulled out a thick leather-bound ledger, and flipped it open to a page crowded with dense columns and tallies.
“The science is solid, and thanks to your hoarding over the winter, we have plenty of raw virobane material to harvest,” Michelle explained, tapping the page. “But scaling up production from manual lab synthesis to mass distribution is a completely different beast. To extract the serum, purify the compounds, run quality control, and bottle the doses safely, we need manpower most of all.”
Joanna nodded, quickly calculating their upcoming timeline. “Give me as many vials as you have ready by the day after tomorrow,” she instructed, her voice leaving no room for debate. “I need to take them with me.”
Michelle and Warren exchanged looks, immediately tallying their current finished inventory.
“In the meantime, we need to solve your bottleneck,” Joanna continued, already formulating a plan to scale up their operations. “I will have Levi and Noah bring people over right away to help you with the manual work. We can build a better, larger secure area for you to grow the bushes and streamline the extraction process.”
Warren let out a breath of relief, the heavy burden of production lifting from his shoulders. “With extra hands to handle the harvesting and basic filtering, we can double our output in days, Boss.”
