Jonna told him quickly about the mole and the army coming. “They want to strip everything from here like locusts. Their plan is to absorb you and any power user they find, putting everyone under their absolute
control.”
Fletcher frowned deeply, leaning his elbows on the desk as a heavy realization struck him. “Well, I forgot to mention something important then. I met Glacier a few months back. He came here to Westridge and completely destroyed a whole block looking for you.”
He rubbed his temples at the memory. “Honestly, it would not have been as violent as it was if Brandon hadn’t enraged him. Glacier taunted Brandon, claiming that you and he were close. Brandon lost his mind and tried to control him with his mental power, but Glacier snapped right out of it and used his ice power to freeze the whole damn block. That was actually how I lost my toe. The guy is incredibly dangerous and hot-headed.”
Fletcher took a deep breath before continuing the explanation. “But, before Brandon went completely off script, Glacier told me why he wanted to find you. He heard about a massive, mysterious faction with a lot of ability users. He said this group was actively looking for the Demoness and her crew. Something about them didn’t sit right with him, so he came to me to dig for info. Unfortunately, the brutal winter forced him back to Dillon, but I told him I would send word to you in the spring. I really wanted to work more with him, but he and Brandon started fighting, and it ended with him leveling that entire block.”
Joanna let out an annoyed huff. Both Brandon and Glacier behaved like spoiled children in her mind, letting personal tantrums disrupt critical survival logistics.
She focused back on Fletcher. “Thanks for the info. I have one of my men here who can sniff out the mole, but he needs time. How many new people are currently in your group? I need to find this mole and kill them before I go see Glacier. Also, I don’t want anyone to know who I am. I am going undercover.”
Fletcher gave her a highly doubtful look. “Little Dove, you may not realize this, but you are completely unable to blend in around here. Tales of your fights have reached epic proportions. Everyone is looking for
the Demoness.”
Joanna shrugged casually. “I plan to alter my appearance and wear heavy clothes.”
Fletcher remembered how she looked when she first walked into his office moments ago-completely buried under layers of winter gear, a mask, and goggles. “Okay, I can help with that,” he conceded. “We have several groups a few blocks away that have recently settled here. They are the only new people in my city right now. It totals about two squads, and they are all part of the frontline. I make them kill zombies, and in exchange, I provide them with one meal a day and a roof over their heads. If there is a mole, it would have to be one of them. It is exactly why I keep them far away from our main operations.”
Joanna nodded, understanding his strategy perfectly. Isolating the newcomers to the frontline kept them
useful but safely blind to the inner workings of his base.
Joanna smiled and, with a casual wave of her hand, brought out a small box and placed it on the table. “Since you have been pretty good to me, I thought I would bring a small gift. My team has been researching a cure for the virus. We have not found one yet, but we do have a vaccine. If you take this, it successfully stops the virus from replicating or binding with your cells.”
Fletcher, who was almost used to being surprised by her, let his jaw hit the floor in utter shock.
