By the time the dinner finally ended, the sun was already sinking behind the trees, and the last
few motorcycles were rumbling out of the Lawson Customs parking lot.
I stood outside for a moment and watched everyone leave.
Emma and Sophia were packing the last of the children’s things into their cars, Ben was
helping Aiden clear the tables, and Mia was collecting empty plates while complaining that
nobody had remembered where the storage containers belonged.
Jace stood beside me with his hands tucked into his pockets.
“You ready to go upstairs?” He asked and I smiled.
“I am.” I said.
We walked through the workshop together and climbed the stairs to the apartment above
Lawson Customs.
The place had become our home without either of us really noticing when it happened.
There were photographs everywhere, including pictures of our daughter, the Iron Vipers, Uncle
Will, our wedding, and ordinary moments that had somehow become some of my favorite
memories.
I went straight to the bathroom and took a long shower, letting the warm water wash away
the sweat and dust from the day.
When I came out, I changed into comfortable clothes and tied my damp hair back before
walking toward the balcony.
The door opened behind me a few minutes later. Jace stepped outside wearing a clean
T-shirt and jeans, and he leaned against the railing beside me.
“You look tired.” He said.
“I am tired.” I said.
“Good tired?” He asked and I smiled.
“Very good tired.” I said.

Most of the lights had been turned off, but several remained glowing above the workshop
doors, casting warm pools of light across the concrete.
Ben was still inside and I watched him move from one garage bay to another, checking the
doors and making sure everything was secured before closing for the night.
He had grown into his role so naturally that sometimes I forgot how nervous he had been
when he first started working for me.
Now he moved through the workshop with confidence.
He checked the locks, walked through the office, turned off the final lights, and stepped
outside.
He looked up and spotted us on the balcony.
“Everything’s locked!” He called out and I raised my hand.
“Thanks, Ben.” I said.
He nodded and climbed into his truck.
“See you tomorrow.” He said.
“See you tomorrow.” I said.
His truck pulled away, and the parking lot became quiet and I turned my attention toward the
center of the workshop.
Uncle Will’s restored motorcycle stood beneath a soft overhead light.
Even after all this time, seeing it still made something inside my chest tighten.
The motorcycle had been old and battered when we found it, but Jace and the others had
restored it carefully.
Every piece had been cleaned, repaired, or replaced when necessary, while the original
character of the bike had been preserved.
It wasn’t just a motorcycle anymore. It was a piece of Will.
Beside it, mounted proudly on the wall, hung the county’s Best Motorcycle Workshop award.
I stared at it for a long time. There had been a time when I never believed Lawson Customs
