The smell of antiseptic filled my nostrils as I sat beside Ryan’s hospital bed. After the chaos at the Memory Diner, I insisted on staying until he was properly treated. His head injury wasn’t severe, but I couldn’t shake the guilt weighing on me.
The door to the hospital room burst open with such force that it slammed against the wall. My mother, Victoria, stood in the doorway, dressed in an expensive tailored suit, her face contorted with rage.
“You ungrateful little bitch,” she spat, stalking toward me with her finger pointed accusingly. “How dare you report your own father to the
police?”
I rose to my feet, keeping my expression neutral despite the anger boiling inside me. Before Victoria could reach me, Lydia stepped between us, her elderly frame surprisingly steady as she blocked Victoria’s path.
“Don’t you dare touch her,” Lydia warned, her voice sharp despite her age.
Victoria’s hand froze mid–air, her perfectly manicured nails inches from my face. “Get out of my way, you useless human servant.”
“This world has no mother who speaks to her own daughter like that,” Lydia said, her voice trembling with indignation. “You don’t deserve
to call yourself a mother.”
Victoria’s eyes flashed with fury. “You’re nothing but a human servant to the Gray family. What right do you have to interfere?”
I stepped around Lydia, facing my mother directly. “He committed a crime, Mother. Jonathan embezzled family funds. I simply followed
the law.”
“You’re trying to steal our territory!” Victoria hissed, her voice dropping to avoid being overheard by the hospital staff. “You’ve always been jealous of what belongs to your father.”
I laughed coldly. “The territory he wants for his precious Liam? His bastard son with Audrey? Don’t pretend you don’t know about their
affair.”
Victoria’s face paled momentarily before she composed herself. “You have no right-”
The click of expensive heels interrupted us as Kate appeared in the doorway, her expression mirroring our mother’s disgust.
“How dare you speak to Mother that way,” Kate said, stepping into the room. “After everything she’s done for you.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Done for me? Like what, exactly? Pretending I don’t exist? Or perhaps you mean setting me up to take the fall for your little silver stunt three years ago?”

Kate’s expression faltered slightly.
“Don’t think I don’t know about you and your little friends at school,” I continued, my voice dangerously low. All your little games to hurt
Victoria’s perfectly glossed lips curled into a sneer. “I’ll have my lawyers sue you. That territory will never be yours.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “Sue away. I’ll be waiting. I have legal ownership of that territory, and there’s nothing you can do about
it.”
A flash of gold flickered in Victoria’s eyes–her wolf momentarily surfacing in her anger. Kate noticed and quickly grabbed our mother’s
arm.
“Mother, let’s go. This isn’t the place,” Kate urged, shooting me a venomous glare as she led Victoria away.
After they left, Lydia placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Are you okay, dear?”
I nodded, though my heart was pounding. “I’m fine. Let’s just make sure Ryan’s okay before we leave.”
That evening, I collapsed onto my couch, emotionally drained from the day’s events. Devon sat beside me, his warm presence a comfort
after everything that had happened.
“Evie, I want to take you back to my territory,” he said suddenly, his deep voice breaking the silence.
I turned to look at him.“Are…are you feeling okay?”
Devon laughed, the sound rumbling in his chest. “I’m serious. I want to take you to my territory and announce you as my mate. No one
would dare come after you then.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Devon…”
He reached out, gently caressing my cheek with his thumb. I felt the warmth of his touch seep into my skin, and beneath it, I sensed him feeling the faint wolf essence still trapped inside me.
“I know you’re worried about your wolf,” he murmured, leaning closer. “But I can’t wait anymore.”
‘I can’t-” I started, but his lips found mine before I could finish.
The kiss was gentle at first, then grew more passionate as Devon pulled me closer. His hands tangled in my hair as mine gripped his shoulders. When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing heavily,
“I can’t wait any longer,” he whispered against my lips. “Even without your wolf, I want you as my Luna.”
