Chapter 127

Sherry pulled a file folder out of her bag and handed it to Alicia.

“This is evidence that Mavis had someone lure her ex-husband into gambling, then set him up so he’d lose everything. Sherry explained.

She continued, “And that’s not all. I also found out there’s a strong possibility Nicole isn’t actually Mavis’s ex-husband’s daughter.”

Alicia looked surprised. “Go on, I’m listening.”

This is a bombshell, Alicia thought.

Sherry said, “I went to talk to their former neighbors and some friends of Mavis’s ex-husband to get the scoop.

“They told me that when Nicole was little, her dad treated her really well.

“But after he was away for a few days and came back, it was like he’d turned into a whole different person. He started drinking heavily and would even hit Mavis and Nicole.

“One of his friends who’d been away happened to return while I was investigating.

“That guy said that one night, while drinking with Mavis’s ex-husband, the man got drunk and confessed that Mavis had always had a thing for another guy, and even after marrying him, she never let it go.

“And as time went by, he started really noticing Nicole didn’t look much like him at all, so he got suspicious and decided to do a paternity test.

“That’s when he realized he’d been played-a total fool. Mavis had been cheating behind his back, and Nicole wasn’t even his biological kid.

“Back then, he doted on Mavis and Nicole, but once he learned the truth, resentment just consumed him. That’s why every time he drank, he couldn’t stop himself from lashing out or making them sutler.”

Alicia asked, “So, did you ever figure out who Nicole’s biological father is?”

If Alicia hadn’t already run a paternity test between Leo and Nicole, she would’ve seriously doubted if they were actually related by blood.

Sherry replied, “Mavis’s ex-husband kept pressing her for answers, but in the end, she admitted she didn’t even know who Nicole’s real father was.

“So, there was this one time when your father Leo gave your mom a huge surprise for their anniversary. Feeling down, she went drinking alone at a bar.

“While she was there, she spotted a guy who kind of resembled Leo when he was young, and ended up hooking up with him. at a hotel.

“After that night, she got pregnant with Nicole.

“He vanished the next morning. Because he looked somewhat like Leo, she couldn’t bring herself to terminate the pregnancy, so she let her ex-husband believe Nicole was his.

“Mavis never reached out to that man before her divorce, so she really has no idea who he is.”

Alicia was genuinely surprised by this revelation.

In her previous life, she died before ever uncovering this truth.

Mavis’s ex-husband had only used the diary to threaten her, never revealing the paternity test.

‘Could it be that if I’d kept digging, I would’ve found out the truth? Is that why I ended up “accidentally” dead?

‘If that’s really how it went down, then the one who got me killed was probably Nicole’s real dad, Alicia thought.

He’d always stayed hidden in the background, never showing his face, but he had some seriously powerful connections.

Back then, Alicia had almost managed to take down Nicole and her mom more than once, but every time, they somehow managed to dodge disaster-almost like something was protecting them.

Turns out, it wasn’t just luck on their side. That guy was working his magic from the shadows, making sure they always got away clean.

After piecing everything together, Alicia had a pretty good idea who that guy might be.

She asked, “So, does Mavis’s ex-husband actually have the paternity test results?”

Sherry nodded. “Yeah.

“He got wasted one night and broke down to a friend about it, but when he sobered up, he didn’t remember a thing.

“That friend kept it to himself, so nobody else ever found out.

“I only learned about it by pure luck. I happened to help that friend out with something, and that’s how I got the info.”

Alicia had really helped Sherry out, so Sherry felt she owed her and was determined to return the favor.

She kept at it for quite some time, tracking down anyone who might be connected to those two.

Thankfully, all her hard work finally paid off.

Alicia knew Sherry never missed a detail. “Any luck finding out where Mavis’s ex-husband ended up?”

Sherry shook her head, looking apologetic. “No luck. All I know is, after your dad Leo stepped in and pushed for the divorce. the guy just disappeared without a trace and never looked back.

“He’s cut off everyone-friends, family, you name it. Not a word from him all these years.”

Sherry had hit a dead end, no matter what she tried.

Alicia smiled and patted Sherry on the shoulder. “Don’t worry about not finding him. What you found means a lot to me.

“Seriously, thank you so much!”

Sherry’s lead was like flipping on a light in a dark room-suddenly, Alicia knew exactly where to go next.

Sherry grinned. “Come on, you don’t have to be so polite with me. I’m your assistant-this is what I’m here for.”

Alicia dropped the formalities. Sherry was nothing like Haley; she was someone Alicia could actually trust.

They talked over Alicia’s upcoming schedule, grabbed a bite together, and then went their separate ways.

Once she got home, Alicia shot Jason a text: [You home?]

Jason replied almost instantly: [Yeah, you back?]

Alicia: [Yeah, I need to talk to you about something. I’ll come by.]

Jason: [Sure!]

‘She comes to me first whenever something’s up.’ Jason couldn’t help but feel a rush of happiness at the thought.

He hurried to open the door and waited for her to show up.

As soon as Alicia walked in, she gave Jason the rundown on what Sherry had found.

Jason hadn’t expected Nicole’s family history to be this messy.

“My people got a lead on Mavis’s ex-husband. We should be able to find him soon,” Jason said.

“Once we bring him in, we can blow up the whole secret diary thing-and reveal Nicole’s not even his kid.”

Alicia nodded with a sly grin. “Exactly. We’ll drop the paternity test bomb and let everyone play detective about who her real dad is.”

Jason let out a sly laugh. “You’re savage.”

Then he switched gears, “But seriously, well played.”

With that, everyone’s gonna assume Leo is Nicole’s real dad.

Alicia winked. “He wanted a daughter, so why not let him have one?”

Jason agreed, “Yeah, let’s give him what he wants. He’ll probably be thrilled.”

‘Let’s just hope he doesn’t get so “happy” that he faints and ends up back in the hospital, Jason thought.

With Leo’s temper, not only would he totally lose it over being played, but he’d probably go ballistic if he found out his wife had used some other guy as his lookalike-and even ended up having a daughter with him.

Jason let out a low whistle. “Man, this drama just keeps getting better.”

Alicia’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Yeah, and there’s no stopping it now.”

Jason paused, then asked, “So, have you figured out who Nicole’s real dad is?”

Hearing that, Alicia shot back with a grin, “Wait, you’ve got a guess too, don’t you?”

Jason nodded. “Yeah.

“I’m gonna be digging into that guy pretty hard these days.”

They didn’t even need to say it out loud-both of them knew they were thinking of the same person.

Alicia could feel she and Jason were really starting to sync up. “Yeah, I’ll tap into my own network and see what I can dig up

“Now let’s just kick back and watch the drama unfold-trust me, it’s only going to get crazier from here.”

The whole mess between the Hammond and Moore families isn’t going to drag out much longer. The Moore couple love their son way too much to let this go on.

This is all just the warm-up.

As soon as they track down Mavis’s ex-husband, that’s when the real drama kicks off.
