Chapter 153
The entire worldslowed around me. Moments punctuated by the beat of my heart. Vaughn leapt into the air, the bullet just missing him and embedding in the wall.
The guard’s eyes widened a second before Vaughn was on him. Vaughn didn’t hesitate. He sunk his teeth into the guard’s shoulder and with a jerk, snapped his neck.
Kaleb ran for the back door, Garrison on his heels with me over his shoulder. I thrashed again, reaching desperately for that golden pool within me. But I couldn’t seem to grab hold. My side pulsed with pain, and I could feel my energy slowly draining away.
The door grew ever closer. I clawed at Garrison, but he barely reacted. Then a blur of black for launched at m. gaining purchase on Garrison’s leg. He howled and cried out for help. Kaleb paused for the briefest of moments. His gaze connected with mine, rage blazing in his eyes.
Power surged in my palms. I could do this. Simply end him here and now. He more than deserved it for what he’d done. But the wolf’s lifeless eyes flashed in my mind. Nausea swept through me at what I’d done. All it took was that one moment of regret and Kaleb was gone, abandoning his trusted enforcer to certain death.
Garrison’s grip on me tightened, and I cried out in pain. Vaughn let out a vicious snarl and tore at Garrison’s back with his claws. A moment later, a black and gray wolf bounded through the space, leaping into the fray.
Anson. I would’ve known those green eyes anywhere.
As his teeth sank into Garrison’s side, the enforcer’s hold on me loosened and I tumbled to the floor. The impact sent ripples of pain through my entire body. I couldn’t hold in my whimper.
The sound only served to enrage Anson and Vaughn. Seconds later, Garrison was ripped limb from limb. My vision blurred as I struggled to hold on to consciousness.
“Sen!” Caspian shouted.
I could hear him but couldn’t quite make him out
“River! We need you. Knox, get your dad and the medic bag
Warm hands cupped my face. “God, Sen. Where are you hurt?”
“Side.” I was so cold. I shouldn’t have a fever anymore. I was touching Caspian; our bond had been cemented.
He muttered a curse and low growls sounded behind him. A moment later, River’s face filled my vision. There was true devastation in his expression. “Senna.”
He scooped me up into his arms. “We need to get out of here. I can’t use my gift well enough. The walls are shielded.”
“No wonder we couldn’t reach her,” Caspian muttered.

Chapter 153
Fire blazed in my side as River carried me towards the door. I couldn’t hold in a small, strangled sound.
River’s jaw tightened to granite. “I’m so sorry. We’re almost there.”
The second we stepped through the door, the worst of my pain melted away. I was floating in a sea of warmth. I let my head loll onto River’s chest.
A swirl of voices sounded around me, but I struggled to make one out from the next. All I knew was movement and sound and no more pain.
“Lay her down on the blanket. I’ve got my kit.”
“What did they do to her?” Knox’s voice held barely–restrained rage. Warm lips ghosted over my temple. “You’re safe. We’ve got you.”
“I’m losing power. It’s too much pain,” River said.
“We’ll feed you,” Anson jumped in. “Grab his shoulders.”
Cool hands lifted my shirt, and some part of me recognized Mason. “These gashes are deep. I think her lung is punctured.”
“Does she need a hospital?” Knox pushed.
“If I can close the worst of the gashes, her lung should heal on its own with her healing gift. We’ll keep a close eye on her and watch her breathing.”
Something cold and wet moved along my side. I recognized the pressure of a needle and thread, but there was no pain. River was taking it all.
And I could feel my bond–their energy and our connection flowing through me. Tears tracked down my cheeks.
“She’s crying,” Vaughn growled.
I tried to force my eyes open to tell him they were from relief. My eyelids fluttered, light bursting through the dark in brief moments.
Anson leaned over me. “Sen? We’re here.”
There was a brokenness in his tone that had my eyes fully opening. “Anson,” I croaked.
“Baby.” He dropped to the ground next to me, nuzzling the side of my face.
“I’m okay.”
“You’re not. There are fucking gashes in your side.”

“I’m okay. You found me.”
“Not soon enough,” Vaughn gritted out.
He was the only one not touching me. I reached a hand out to him. He stared down at it. “I can’t, Sen. My emotions are all over the place.”
“Please.” I needed them. All of them.
Pain flickered across Vaughn’s face, but he took my hand in his.
The feeling that flooded me was indescribable. Sparks of warmth and light and love. Such groundedness. More tears slid down my face.
Knox wiped them away with his thumbs. “Sen.”
“I’m crying because I’m happy. I’m so happy.”
Caspian’s thumb swept back and forth across my thigh. “How’s your pain?”
I looked up at River who’d gone a little pale. “I’m good. You don’t have to keep taking so much.”
A muscle in his cheek fluttered. “I’ve never felt that level of pain. What did they do to you?”
Garrison’s torture flashed in my mind, quickly followed by an image of Rezah crumpling to the floor. “Rezah!” I tried to get up.
“Don’t move,” Mason ordered. “You could rip your stitches.”
“The girl in the cell. You have to help her.”
