Chapter 181
Chapter 181
A hint of surprise flickered across Kaleb’s expression. He hadn’t realized I’d known what he’d done. “It was necessary. Being a ruler means making hard decisions.”
“Except you aren’t a ruler.” No one had put him in a position of power. No one except himself and his delusions of grandeur.
“It’s my destiny,” he growled.
“If it was your destiny, then you wouldn’t have to kill people to get there.”
“Are you sure about that, little energy bender? You killed a man right over there in a fight to claim your destiny.”
My palms dampened and my stomach roiled. I could still see the shifter’s wide eyes as he fell. The blank stare that never blinked again. “I was defending myself.”
“And so am I. I’m defending my way of life. Defending our gifts. If we continue on this current path, we will lose all
our power.”
He truly believed that. But I was starting to wonder if the power had fled because there were those in our midst who were so hungry for it, who would do anything to take moreinstead of doing good with it. The thought had me considering my own issues with my gift. I’d been pushing so hard, trying to force it, maybe that was why it was escaping me. I was too focused on the power and not the good I was trying to achieve with it.
“You like your power, don’t you, Senna?” Kaleb pushed.
“Sometimes.” It was the truth. There were times it terrified me, other times it held me in rapt awe. “But I’d never hurt people to keep it, especially those who’ve done nothing to deserve it.”
“Weak,” he spat. “I can’t believe I spawned such a coward for a daughter.”
I stiffened, my hands clenching at my sides. “The only coward here is you. The one who steals others‘ powers and pretends they’re his own. But they aren’t. Just because you’ve forced them into your army doesn’t mean you own their gifts. It doesn’t make you strong. It makes you the weakest of them all.”
“You think I’m weak?” Kaleb’s voice grew tighter with each word.
He lifted his hands and wind spun around us. This wasn’t a gentle breeze like he’d used in Knox’s room to disguise our conversation. This was akin to a hurricane.
My hair whirled around me, whipping across my face.

Chapter 181
“I’ll show you weak. And you’ll beg me for mercy.”
A bolt of lightning shot out of his fingertips.
I tried to throw myself out of its path, but the wind held me in place. It hurtled towards me and there wasn’t a thing I could do about it. Then there was nothing but pain.
My eyes flew open as I writhed in agony.
“Senna.” River’s hands were on me in a flash, pulling away the worst of the pain.
“Shit. The tie came loose in the night,” Anson said, holding up the bathrobe tie. “I’m so sorry.”
“Not your fault.” I could barely get the words out as River pulled more of the pain.
A muscle in Vaughn’s jaw ticked. “Where does it hurt?”
I did a quick mental survey. It ached everywhere but the worst was along my ribs. “My side.”
Vaughn was instantly tugging up my tank top. Caspian sucked in a sharp breath.
I looked down and stopped breathing altogether. The black mark that had appeared on my chest after my first dream had faded in a number of hours. But something told me this mark wouldn’t fade as easily.
A ragged lightning bolt cascaded down my ribs. I prodded gently on the skin and immediately hissed as pain rocked through me. River tugged at more of my hurt. I shook my head. “I’m okay. Don’t wear yourself out.”
River simply kept pulling on that thread of pain until the worst that I felt was a dull ache. I collapsed back on the pillows as the buzz of his warmth took over my body.
Caspian brushed the hair out of my face. “How do you feel now?”
“Like I have a River high.”
Normally the guys would’ve laughed at my quip, but I didn’t even get a chuckle.
“What happened?” Knox asked quietly.
“Kaleb.”
Vaughn let out a low growl.
I toyed with the hem of the comforter. “He needs me for something.”
“If that’s the case, then why is he trying to kill you?” Anson barked.
