Chapter 45
Knox was quiet for a moment, but he slid his hand into mine, linking our fingers. “Does your dad know?”
“He’s never home, so he doesn’t see it. I just left him a message and asked him to come check on her.”
“That’s good. I could have my dad call him too”
I shook my head, cutting Knox off. “I don’t think either of them would handle it well if they knew I was talking about her to other people.”
“I get that, but this stuff is serious. People can accidentally overdose pretty easily.”
I twisted the end of my bracelets around my finger. “I know. I think I’ll try to sneak in there tonight and take pictures of all the meds. I’ll call her
doctors if I have to.”
“That’s not a bad idea. She may be using different doctors to get multiple prescriptions.”
The bitterness that rose up in me was strong and swift. I hated myself for it. Anger at my mom, that she could find the energy to get herself to multiple doctors, to the pharmacy, but she couldn’t find it in herself to ask me one kind question, to hug me, anything.
Knox tugged my hand so that I leaned into him, and curled his other hand under my hair, around the back of my neck. He pressed his lips to my
hair. “You’re not alone. You know that, right?”
Did I? There was a comfort I felt when I was with one of the guys or all of them that I’d never known before. Not even when Lacey was alive and our family was whole. But as beautiful as that comfort was, I couldn’t seem to hold onto it. As if it were sand, slipping through my fingers.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Knox squeezed the back of my neck. “You’ll learn to trust it over time, to trust us. We want to be there for you.”
I straightened, searching Knox’s eyes. Those deep blue pools held truth and something more. Something I wasn’t quite ready for.
Heat pooled low in my belly as I swallowed. Knox’s lips were just a breath away. So close that, if I just leaned forward, I would know what they felt like, what they tasted like.
“I want to be there for you too, you know. This isn’t a one–way street.”
Knox’s mouth curved, my gaze tracking the movement. “You are. Just being with you… I feel peace. I haven’t felt that in a long time.”
I thought about what Caspian had said about Knox’s mom being killed in the attack. “I’m here if you ever want to talk about anything. We could
have a code word.”
He chuckled. “What should our code word be?”
“Pink, fluffy bunnies?”
Knox shook his head as he released his hold on my neck and started his truck. “I need something more manly than that.”
I tapped my lips in an exaggerated thinking gesture. “Meat, potatoes, and monster trucks? That’s manly, right?”
Knox’s lips twitched. “How about sea glass?”
“Sea glass?”
“It’s what your eyes remind me of. They’re green, but in certain lights, they can almost look blue. Just like how sea glass is in the sun.”

My throat caught as I struggled to swallow against the burn. People rarely noticed that my eyes did that, changed color in certain lights. They usually didn’t care enough to pay that close of attention. But Knox had.
“Sea glass. I like it.”
This gaze caught mine, and he linked our fingers again. “I do, too.”
Knox guided his truck along a gravel road, leading us farther and farther from town.
“How long does it take you to get to my house?”
He maneuvered to avoid a dip in the road. “Only like ten minutes.”
“It feels like a whole other world out here.”
The forest seemed to arch around us, creating a tunnel around the road. The lush trees and foliage were so thick, I couldn’t see more than a few feet in any direction.
“It’s a different feel, for sure.” Knox pulled to a stop at a large, wooden gate.
