Chapter 46
Chapter 46
Knox shook his head. “It’s a irus community. Everyone has a job that helps us be self sufficient.”
Like a commune?
Knox’s lips twitched. “Just call us wannabe hippies.”
It wasn’t such a bad idea. I would’ve loved to have help with my mom, someone to go to so that I could share my concerns. Instead, everything had landed on my shoulders, and I was buckling under the weight.
The trees parted, giving me a peek at another cabin. I let out a small gasp. Cabin was the wrong word. This was more like a mountain mansion. The structure itself almost faded into the woods surrounding it, as if it had sprung from the land itself a combination of rough wood and smooth
stone, with a black, metal roof.
“It’s beautiful.”
Knox pulled to a stop beside the building. “It’s big, but it’s where we have all our meals and meetings.”
“No one lives here?”
“Dad and I do. Coby and Jasmine, too.”
I stiffened. “You and Jasmine live together?”
Knox rubbed the back of his neck. “Not like that. She and her mom have rooms on the opposite side of the house.”
My stomach twisted, nausea sweeping through me. I could only imagine how often Jasmine found herself at Knox’s door.
Knox reached over and grabbed my hand. “I have no interest in Jasmine. Less than zero.”
“Okay.” I hated how soft my voice sounded. What right did I have to wonder if Knox might be interested in Jaz? I was drawn to more than just Knox. Even the idea of having to choose made me physically ill. I couldn’t imagine a life without any of them, even prickly–pear Vaughn.
“Ro?”
“Sorry. I’m a little all over the place. That’s all.”
He nodded slowly, still keeping hold of my hand. “You know, it’s okay if you have feelings for more than one of us.”
“What?” My voice went all high–pitched on the question.
Knox’s mouth curved. “It’s okay if you’re feeling a pull in multiple directions. That isn’t weird or abnormal here. It’s fairly common. I just
wanted you to know that.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. “O–okay.” What else could I say? I couldn’t begin to imagine how that would work. I tugged my hand from his. “We should go.”
“You’re right.”
I climbed out of the truck, and by the time I was down, Knox was waiting for me. He inclined his head towards the side of the lodge. “Everyone should be around back.”
I nodded as his hand found the small of my back, guiding me forward. Voices lifted on the air, punctuated by shrieks. As we rounded the building, a crowd came into view. There had to be three or four dozen people milling about–kids running in circles, playing some sort of tag

game, and adults in various groups. And a spread of food that looked like it could feed an army.
“Wow.” I mumbled.
“We go big on barbeque days.”
“I can see that.”
Slowly, all the eyes of the crowd shifted towards us, and I found myself inching closer to Knox instinctively. “Why are they staring?”
Knox swept his thumb back and forth across my back. “We don’t get a lot of new people around here. Give them a few minutes, and they’ll all forget that you’re new.”
I did my best to hold on to that promise,
The crowd seemed to almost part as Knox’s father made his way towards us. His smile was warm, but his sheer size was intimidating he had an almost lethal energy to the way he walked. “Senna, I’m so glad you could make it.”
He extended a hand to me, and I took it. “Thank you for having me, Mr. Aldridge.”
“Please, call me Mason. We aren’t formal around here.”
“Okay.”
“Let’s introduce you around.” His gaze cut to Knox. “Come with us.”
