Chapter 51
The ringing stopped, then started up again. I just kept staring at my reflection in the mirror. My face had no color, only making the streaks of blood on my neck stand out more. My eyes were huge. Shock. My brain knew I was in shock, but that knowledge didn’t make my appearance any less startling.
A tap sounded on my window and I jolted, letting out a small shriek. My heart hammered against my ribs as I stepped out of the bathroom. Lucas‘ face appeared in my window, and he motioned for me to open the pane.
God. I didn’t want to. If I did, there would be questions, ones I wasn’t ready to answer. Yet, if I didn’t, I knew he wouldn’t go away.
I moved to the window seat, unlocking the window, and began to open it. Riverpushed it the rest of the way, hoisting himself inside. “Senna-” His sentence cut off as he took me in. I knew what he was seeing, and none of it was good. “What happened?”
The growl to his words had me falling back a step. Riverdidn’t growl, he wasn’t intimidating. He was my gentle giant.
He closed his eyes for a moment, as if trying to get himself under control. When he opened them again, his expression was gentler, though still a touch feral. “Senna. What happened?”
“I, uh, uh-”
“The truth. Don’t come up with some lie.”
That was exactly what I’d been searching for. Some believable story. That I’d tripped and clocked myself in the face. That I’d been attacked by a rabid cat. Something. Anything but the truth.
“My mom.” My voice caught on the words. “She threw a glass at my head.”
Lucas‘ hazel eyes darkened to a color I’d never seen in the natural world. “I’ll kill her.”
Riverwas moving towards the door, but I stepped into his path. “Luc, stop.”
“She. Hurt. You,” he gritted out as his chest heaved.
“I’ll be fine. And you can’t confront her–she’ll only be angrier that you’re here. I’m supposed to be grounded.”
“I don’t care what you’re supposed to be. She can’t get away with this.”
“She’s drunk, Luc,” I whispered. “She probably doesn’t even remember what she did.”
His jaw tensed, and then he rolled his shoulders back. “Let me see your cheek.”
“It’s not that bad.”
“Let me see it, Ro. I have to see if we need to take you to a doctor.”
I slowly lowered the washcloth as he moved in closer.
“Fuck. This is bad. You might need stitches.” He bent and picked up my purse, riffling through it and pulling out my phone.
“What are you doing?”
He put it to his ear. “Calling Knox.” He paused for a moment. “Yeah, I need you to come get us. We need to go to your dad-”
“No!” I gripped Lucas‘ arm. “Not Mason.”

“Hell,” he muttered and then turned his attention back to the call. “Just come get us. We’ll meet you out front.” He hung up and tossed the phone into my bag.
“I can’t leave with you. If my mom finds out”
“It sounds like your mom is two seconds away from passing out, and if you think I’m just going to leave you here, you have another thing
coming.”
I closed my eyes but felt Lucas‘ heat as he moved in even closer. He carefully pressed the cloth back to my cheek as his other hand cupped the
unmarred side of my face. “I need you to let me take care of you right now. Please.”
It was the sheer devastation in his tone that did it. I opened my eyes to take in the hazel ones before me and nodded
“Let’s go.” He grabbed my purse and backpack, and then slid the desk away from the door. A muscle in his cheek ticked as he took in the bloody fingerprints.
I gripped his arm as he opened the door. We stood there for a moment, listening. I didn’t hear anything, and Rivermotioned me forward.
We crept down the stairs. Each time a plank groaned, I winced and prepared myself for my mother’s screams. They never came. Riverslowly opened the door, flipping the lock on the handle once I’d stepped through.
Headlights appeared as we descended my front steps, but Riverstayed close, a hand on the small of my back. He opened the door to the cab of Knox’s truck, and I climbed inside.
