Chapter 52

Anson,I said softly. We’re going to Anson’s.

Knox pulled away from the curb while Caspian called Anson. The soft tones of the conversation swept over me, but I didn’t even try to discer the words. I didn’t care. I wanted to float away into nothingness.

I let myself do just that, lulled by the beating of Lucasheart. Before long, Knox was pulling to a stop, and my door flew open. Anson pulled me gently out of the truck and into his arms.

Baby, no.His voice was ravaged.

I’m okay,I croaked.

You’re not,he bit out. But you will be.He carried me through the open door and into the kitchen, setting me on the counter. We need to clean those cuts.

Okay.

An engine sounded at the front of the house and then raised voices. Anson moved to stand in front of me as Vaughn tore into the kitchen.

Move,Vaughn growled.

After you take a breath,Anson shot back.

I need to see her.

I placed a hand on Anson’s shoulder. It’s okay.

You sure about that, Ro?

I’m sure.

Anson moved aside but only the barest amount. Vaughn stepped forward, his hands flexing and clenching. Why didn’t you tell us this was happening?

It hasn’t happened before. Not like this.

Swear it,he growled.

I swear.I reached out to take his hand, but Vaughn stepped out of my reach. Don’t.

I snatched my hand back. Sorry.

I have to go. I need to run.Vaughn spoke to no one and everyone.

Caspian gave him a jerky nod. We’ll be here.

And with that, Vaughn was gone.

It was just one more hurt, but I couldn’t take it. I shut down. I could hear the conversation around me, but I wasn’t truly taking it in.

I need to call Doc,Knox said.

She doesn’t want that kind of attention,Riverargued.

Look at her face,Knox shot back.

Anson pulled a kit out of one of his cabinets. I can fix it.

Everyone in the room turned to him.

What do you mean?Caspian asked.

He began pulling out gauze, tape, antiseptic, and a small tube of something. I got in my share of fights after my dad hailed. I can fix this.

Rivertook a step forward. Are you sure, man?

You think I’d touch her if I wasn’t?he barked back

Knox put a hand on Lucasshoulder. Let him treat her. He knows what he’s doing.

Anson nodded at Knox and walked over to the sink to wash his hands. It’ll go better if I have one person helping me. Someone with steady hands.

Me,Caspian said and moved to the sink to wash his hands as well.

They patted their hands dry with paper towels and then came back to me. Anson stood directly in front of me. The first part is the worst. It’s going to sting.

Okay.I couldn’t find it in myself to care. It couldn’t hurt worse than the rest of the night.

Anson poured some antiseptic onto a gauze pad and pressed it gently to the cuts on my face. I didn’t move. My eyes burned, but I didn’t let the tears fall.

Almost done with this part. Just need to make sure the cuts are clean. After a few more swipes, he threw the gauze in the trash. Caspian?

Yeah?

I need you to hold the cut together while I glue it.

Glue it?Riversnapped. Are you crazy?

He’s not,Knox defended. They use a form of superglue in hospitals every day.

Anson uncapped a tube. Got my own medicalgrade shit right here.

Handy,Rivermuttered.

Caspian moved in, raising his hands to my face. I’m so sorry if I hurt you.

It’s okay,I whispered.

He and Anson moved in tandem over my cuts, sealing them closed. I wasn’t sure how long it took them, but eventually, they both stepped back.
