Chapter 74
Mason smiled at me, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Thank you, Senna.”
The various conversations picked back up again, and Vaughn pushed my plate closer to me. “Eat.”
I scowled at him. “Give me a second, would you?”
“I heard your stomach growl, and Caspian said you barely ate yesterday.”
“When did he tell you that?” I sent a glare in Caspian’s direction.
“Just now,” Vaughn answered. At my perplexed look, Vaughn tapped the side of his head. “All pack members have a mental link. We can speak to the pack as a whole or to specific members. You’ll have that link too, once you shift and become an official member.”
My jaw fell open. “Why are you guys always keeping the cool stuff from me?”
Vaughn chuckled. “There’s plenty more where that came from.”
For the first time, a trickle of excitement flowed through me. I was going to turn into a wolf. And who knew what kind of powers I’d have.
River sent me a wink from across the table. “I can’t wait to run with you in your wolf form.”
A pleasant shiver ran down my spine at his words. “Can I see you in your wolf forms?” I’d seen Knox, Anson, and Vaughn, but not Caspian and River. And I wanted a chance to really take them in when we weren’t under attack.
River‘ eyes heated. “After school.”
I nodded and took another sip of my Diet Coke. I forced myself to eat more of the delicious meal, even though my stomach was still on a roller–coaster ride. When I finally pushed my plate aside, Sam stood.
“I’ll get my kit, and we can take your blood in the living room.”
“You know how to do that?” I squeaked.
He smiled at me. “Don’t worry, I’m a certified EMT. I’ve got needles down pat.”
“Luc, you sit with her and hold her hand so it doesn’t hurt,” Anson ordered.
I scowled at him. “You’re not forcing River to take my pain while I get blood drawn.”
River pushed back from the table and stood. “I want to do it.”
I got to my feet but held out a hand to halt him. “No. I can handle a freaking little prick.” Then I glanced at Crispin. “You’ll hold my hand, right?”

Chapter 74
Crispin’s chest puffed up. “Of course.”
Vaughn chuckled, shaking his head, but the rest of the guys glared at the nine–year–old.
Crispin and I led the way into the living room, sitting down on the sofa. Crispin held my hand tightly. “Don’t worry, Dad’s good
at this.”
“Thanks, big man.”
I rolled up my sleeve as Sam pulled a few things out of his kit. He wrapped a band around my arm and swiped an alcohol swab over the crook of my elbow. “Just a quick pinch.”
I closed my eyes and Crispin squeezed my hand, but I barely felt anything at all. A minute later, Sam pressed a cotton ball to my arm. “All done.”
My eyes popped open. “That’s it?”
Sam laughed. “Not bad, right?”
“Not bad at all.”
But as I looked at the vial of dark red liquid, I couldn’t help but wonder if that small container had the ability to turn my life on its head once again.
“Think we could play hooky today?“I asked as we pulled into the school parking lot.
We’d forgone two vehicles today and all piled into Anson’s Range Rover. I could see heads swiveling towards the SUV as we made our way through the maze of cars.
Anson shot me a devilish look in the rearview mirror. “We could go to my house and…”
Knox smacked him upside the head. “The last thing we need is the school calling Senna’s dad and telling him she’s not here.”
I hadn’t heard a peep from my dad since that one text message. No “how are you?” No “I’m sorry.” Nothing.
Anson pulled into his usual parking space. “Fine. Can we go back to my place after school at least?”
Knox shook his head. “My dad wants us back at the compound.”
