Sam chuckled. “You hit like a linebacker.”

I tried to smile, but I couldn’t seem to get my lips to obey. The image of Jasmine’s mouth on Knox’s playing on a loop in my mind. My stomach pitched, and I closed my eyes, inhaling through my nose.

Sam’s hand went to my shoulder. “Why don’t we get you back to the lodge. You came quite a ways off the beaten path.”

I looked around me and realized I didn’t have the first clue how to get back, even if it was the last place I wanted to go.

“Thanks. I’d appreciate that.”

“Follow me.” Sam started through the trees, picking an unseen path that was wide enough for us to walk side by side

“Mason put me on the task force to look for your mom, for Abigail.”

“That’s good.” My pulse thrummed in my temples. I didn’t have brain space for missing mothers right now, not when all I could see was Jasmine and Knox.

“Do you have any memory of her?”

I shook my head. “My parents adopted me when I was only a month old. But it was a closed adoption, so they didn’t even know my mother’s name. All they had were a few details about her health history.” Missing one tiny detail. That there was a chance I’d turn into a wolf.

Sam made a humming noise as he kept walking. “And they don’t know where you were born?”

“No. The adoption agency was in Baltimore, but they took placements from all over the country.”

“I’ll have to get the name from you so I can see about breaking into their records.”

My steps faltered. “You can do that?”

Sam chuckled. “In my sleep. Caspian too. He’s even better than me.”

“Whoa.”

I started walking again, looking around me. “I could’ve sworn the lodge was the other way. My sense of direction is the worst.”

Sam’s smile was tight. “We have to go down a bit to get to a bridge to cross the stream.”

A prickle of unease slid through me. “Oh.”

We were quiet for a bit as we walked, the sun dropping even lower in the sky. The only sounds I heard were the distant flow of water and the wind in the trees. I shivered as the breeze picked up.

Sam caught the movement out of the corner of his eye. “You won’t have to worry about ever being cold soon.”

“I won’t?”

“Wolf shifters run hot. It’s also almost impossible for us to catch human illnesses.”

“No cancer or anything like that?” I glanced over my shoulder in the direction that I thought the lodge was. We were moving farther and farther away. I needed that damn telepathic walkie–talkie system the other guys had.

“Nope. We have other risks, but not that.”

“It’s too bad we don’t know what protects us from those diseases. We could help a lot of people.”

Sam shot a look in my direction. “It would leave us too exposed. We’d all end up as lab rats.”

I looked over my shoulder again. “I feel like we’re getting farther away.”

“It’s the long way around. But it gives me time to talk to you.”

My steps slowed until I stopped altogether. “About what?”

Sam turned to face me. “I know who your father is.”

“What?“The single word came out on a whoosh of air.

“I know who your father is, and he wants to help you.”

I took an instinctive step back. Help me. What did that mean? “Who is he?”

Sam took a slow step forward. “We’ll tell you everything once I get you to him. You aren’t safe here.”

My heart picked up its pace as I took another step back. “Why can’t he come here?”

A hulking figure stepped out of the trees. “Yes, Sam. Why can’t he come here?” Vaughn’s ice blue eyes flashed in the low light

as he stalked towards us.

Sam’s head whipped in Vaughn’s direction, a snarl on his lips. “Don’t concern yourself with this, pup.”

Vaughn prowled forward, stepping between me and Sam. “I’m no pup. Haven’t been one since I was eleven and lived through hell on earth.”

My heart stuttered at his words, pain slicing through me.

“The pack is on its way,” Vaughn said matter of factly. “You can explain why you’ve been keeping secrets from the alpha.”
