Chapter 80
“No,” Vaughn snarled. His chest heaved as he glared at Sam. “Have you forgotten my gift so easily?”
A hint of wariness filled Sam’s expression. “You can only use it in human form. My friends here will rip you to pieces before you have a chance.”
Vaughn moved in a flash, his palm landing square on Sam’s chest. The effect was instantaneous, as if Sam had been hit with an electric force. His body convulsed in a series of seizures. He crumpled to the ground, his mouth open in a silent scream.
The wolves didn’t hesitate, both of them launching at Vaughn.
“Run!” he yelled, just before he shifted into his glorious black wolf form.
One of the brown wolves sank his teeth into Vaughn’s flank, while the other charged him, sending him to the ground. I glanced frantically around, looking for any sort of weapon. My gaze settled on a rock the size of a softball, and I ran to pick it up.
A snarl sounded as Vaughn’s claws raked across one of the wolves‘ chests. I didn’t wait. I hurled the rock at the wolf. My aim rang true, hitting him in the flank. It startled him enough to lose focus. Vaughn’s teeth sank into the wolf’s neck, and he sent him flying into a tree.
The action gave the other brown wolf an opening. He launched himself at Vaughn, his teeth sinking into Vaughn’s side. Vaughn let out a howl that had my skin prickling and a sharp pain lancing through my chest.
No. No. No.This wasn’t happening.
Vaughn struggled to right himself as the other wolf tore at his stomach. Sam moaned on the ground. I searched frantically for any other rock or stick large enough to do damage.
Vaughn let out another howl, and it was as if something deep inside me flared to life. There was a burn and then a flash of light. Pain, as if all my bones were breaking, seared through me. I stumbled, blinking as I sucked in breath. Only I wasn’t on
two feet, I was on four.
I took in the reddish fur of my paws for a moment before another howl from Vaughn had me snapping into action. Instinct took over, and I charged the brown wolf, jaws snapping. My teeth ripped at his side, taking him by surprise.
He growled low at me, motioning with his head. Did he seriously think I would follow him? I let out my own growl standing between him and Vaughn, who lay panting on the ground, barely moving.
The brown wolf dashed forward, nipping my front leg. I didn’t hesitate going right for his neck. The taste of blood on my tongue made my stomach roil, but I ignored it.
The brown wolf snarled, his claws raking across my stomach. Pain bloomed bright, but I dove for him again. I had to hold him
off.
He bit into my hind leg, and I cried out. But as I did, a series of howls sounded in the forest. Close. I could feel them, my They were so close.

Chapter 80
The brown wolf’s head snapped up at the sound. He looked at Sam, still writhing on the ground, and then took if from the direction he came.
Four wolves charged into the clearing. I knew they were mine immediately, even River and Caspian, who I hadn’t seen in wolf form before. But my gaze immediately flew back to Vaughn. I rushed over to him, nosing him with my snout.
He didn’t react. I watched his chest rise and fall, but his breathing was far too shallow. Then it stopped altogether.
I shifted back without even thinking about it. My muscles strained and bones popped. Then I was on two legs again. They shook as I fell to my knees, not caring in the least that I was as naked as the day I was born, my clothes lost somewhere in my
shift.
“Vaughn.” His name was a harsh whisper on my lips.
“Senna! You’re bleeding.” River was at my side in a flash, his hand going to my stomach.
I could hear Anson and Knox in my mind now. They were running after the brown wolf. I could hear Mason too, telling them he was following. Other wolves filled the clearing, ones I didn’t recognize.
Caspian rushed over to us. His silver gray coat had a black patch on the chest. It was that same almost heart–shape that Vaughn had, but in reverse. His shape blurred, and then he was human again. “Vaughn.” He pressed his face into his brother’s neck and something in me broke.
Tears poured from my eyes, and I shook River off of me. “Give me space.”
“Ro, you can’t heal this. He’s too far gone,” River said quietly.
“I have to try.” My voice broke on the words, but my hands reached out, sinking into Vaughn’s fur. There was something there. A life force of sorts. And I knew Vaughn wasn’t gone. Not yet.
“He’s still alive.” I focused on my hands, the same feeling from when I’d healed Anson’s cut. I tried to grab hold of that hum of energy within me, the spark I’d felt when I first touched Vaughn. Then I pushed it into him with everything I had in me.
My heart stuttered, skipping a few beats, and River steadied me with his hands.
His fingers tightened on my shoulders. “You can’t do this. It’s taking too much. I can feel it.”
Caspian’s eyes flew from his brother to me. There was a look of such desperation on him. He didn’t know what to ask of me. To give up? To keep pushing?
“Caspian, say something,” River ordered.
“I–I can’t. I…” His words trailed off, not able to finish his sentence.
Lara rushed over to us. “She needs you. All of you.”
She must have told Anson and Knox the same through the pack link because I heard whispers in my head that they were coming.
I pushed more energy into Vaughn, wavering on my knees. Caspian hurried to my side, placing his hands on my waist, helping

to steady me. I felt a small burst of something flow through me, and I pushed it all into Vaughn.
A slow rhythmic thumping grew louder. I knew it was Vaughn. His heart was coming back. It was working. But as I stared at the blood seeping from his gut wound, I knew it wasn’t enough.
