Chapter 79
Calista thought back to her college days. Those had been such beautiful, carefree years. But after she married
Killian, she’d gradually lost her spark and slowly withered away, right up until now.
She looked at Bradley with deep emotion. “I never heard you mention that before.”
Back then, she’d only thought of him as Killian’s business partner and nothing more. Now that she knew he was her junior from university, she felt not just grateful but also a
natural sense of closeness.
Bradley smiled, “That’s my fault. I should’ve told you
sooner.”
\___”It’s fine, really. Better late than never. Honestly, it’s been
forever since I’ve run into anyone from our department.”
“I still remember all those legendary stories about you from back then, Calista.”
The two chatted happily, the atmosphere warm and qomfortable.

Evander’s narrowed eyes took on a dangerous edge. He recognized that voice. This was the man who’d competed with him for the sapphire chess pieces at last night’s auction.

As he thought back to the Ferrer family invitation that/ had been sent to Hartwell Manor today, his suspicions grew clearer.
Evander tapped Olivia’s shoulder and asked quietly, “Olivia, does your mom know Mr. Ferrer?”
“Mr. Ferrer? He’s my dad’s friend. It’s pretty normal for my mom to know him too, right?” Olivia tilted her head with a teasing smile. “Mr. Hayes, are you jealous?”
“Hmph.” Evander let out a soft snort and admitted it openly. “Your mom’s so amazing. Of course I’m jealous.”
Olivia smiled, “Fair enough. But my mom’s never been close with my dad’s business friends. They’re usually just acquaintances. Why are they talking for so long this time?”
“Because your mom and Mr. Ferrer went to the same

university.”
Evander had excellent hearing and could naturally pick up Calista and Bradley’s conversation. He gritted his teeth silently and kept his eyes locked on them.
Calista reached out her hand. “Whenever you are free, I’d love to treat you and Susan to dinner.”
Bradley shook her hand and jumped at the opportunity. “Perfect! I’m free tonight.”
Calista froze for a moment. What was with that eager expression? But she wasn’t someone who went back on her word…
Before she could answer, Evander called out to her. “Calista, come take a look at this form. Olivia doesn’t
know how to fill it out.”
Calista gave Bradley an apologetic smile and walked over.
Bradley stood there, his deep gaze settling on Evander.
Who is this man who suddenly appeared out of nowhere?

His probing eyes studied Evander carefully.
Evander felt the stare but pretended not to notice.
Instead, he leaned even closer to Calista and Olivia in the
front row.
He stretched out his arm, circling both Calista and Olivia
into his embrace. The two of them seemed used to it and
let him hold them like that.
Bradley clenched his fists, finding the sight unbearably irritating.
Just then, another wave of chatter rose up in the hall.
Killian walked into the hall with Austin and Nicole by his
side.
Even in middle age, Killian remained strikingly handsome and cold, Austin was a carefree young playboy in his prime, and Nicole was young and stunningly beautiful.
The three of them were just like that family from earlier, different styles but equally eye-catching and attractive.
But while that earlier group was parents with their 477

daughter, this trio looked more like a dad with his daughter and son..
“We’re getting spoiled today with all these gorgeous families,” someone murmured.
“That’s the CEO from Frost Group, isn’t it? I heard he’s really tight with Mr. Ferrer, the guy organizing this whole competition.”
“Wait, really? Think there’s something shady going on? Maybe this whole thing was set up for Mr. Frost’s son
Austin…”
“Who knows? But Austin only takes up one spot anyway. As long as you make the top six, you can get the national certificate. That thing’s worth its weight in gold for college applications.”
Calista and Olivia spotted Killian and his group too. They glanced over once, lost interest immediately, and went back to filling out their registration forms.
