Chapter 83
“Mr. Hayes, are you serious? You really have that much time to play chess with me?” Olivia asked. Besides Calista nobody in this world would be willing to spend that much time on her.
“Yeah, I’m on vacation right now. I’ve got plenty of time,” Evander smiled.
“That’s amazing! You’re so good at chess. With you teaching me, I’ll definitely improve a ton. If I get a national certificate, won’t that get me closer to Sir Winchester?”
Evander looked at Olivia through the rearview mirror. “You really like Sir Winchester that much?”
Olivia’s eyes sparkled. “Yeah!”
Calista chimed in, “For her middle school graduation gift, I got her one of Sir Winchester’s chess manuals. I had to ask around through so many friends before I finally found someone who’d bought it from a foreigner. This girl’s been obsessed with Sir Winchester for ages.”

Something flickered in Evander’s eyes as a plan started
forming. “Alright then. You go to class during the day, and I’ll come over in the evenings to play chess with you. How’s that sound?”
Olivia nodded eagerly. “Thanks, Mr. Hayes. As long as you don’t mind the trouble!”

After Evander dropped off Calista and Olivia, he headed straight back to Hayes Manor.
Hayes Manor was the largest garden-style mansion in the Stillwater Bay residential area, far from the noise of the city and tucked away in quiet seclusion.
The older generation of the Hayes family had been high-ranking military officers who served on the battlefield, and they used to live in military housing compounds.
Later, Evander’s father branched out on his own and
went into business, so the whole family moved to Stillwater Bay. That was how the Hayes family ended up with their connection to the Hartwell family.

It was rare for Evander to come home. When his parents, Byron Hayes and Kristen Hayes, saw him, they were surprised but stayed calm.
Kristen pushed up her glasses and glanced at her son out of the corner of her eye. “Something big happened?”
Her tone was cool and detached. After all, Evander was always impossible to pin down, so if he was making this rare trip home, he must have something important to say.
Byron was holding a chess strategy book and didn’t even look up, just grunted. “Handle your own problems. Coming to us won’t help.”
The way this couple treated their son could only be described as extremely cold, but who told him to reach his forties without getting married or even dating?
It left Byron and Kristen with nothing to do after
retirement.
The house had no life to it, cold and empty.
Especially after Byron ran into Hugh walking his dog

yesterday.
Hugh mentioned his two grandsons were only sophomores in college but already planning for grad
school, and his granddaughter had placed second in her middle school exams.
It made Byron so jealous. Hugh had sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, and even a dog.
And here Byron was, all alone. What was the point of making all that money? What was the point of running all those companies when there was no one to inherit them?
Life was hopeless with nothing to look forward to. The more Byron thought about it, the angrier he got, and he couldn’t even focus on his chess book anymore.
Evander gave an awkward smile. “Dad, Mom, I really do have something I want to discuss with you.”
“Don’t.” Kristen raised her hand to stop him. “You’ve told us before not to meddle in your business. You’re already in your forties. Stop depending on your family and break free already!”

She gave him a merciless eye roll, and her words were just as harsh.
After all, they’d been planning out his future since he was in his twenties and hoped he’d get married, have kids, and then inherit the massive Hayes family empire.
Who would’ve thought he’d up and join the military without a word and stay away for so many years?
Every time they pushed Evander to get married, he coldly
refused.
At first, Byron and Kristen had been all excited trying to set things up for him. Then they backed off and let things take their course. Now? They’d thrown in the towel completely. They didn’t expect their son to ever settle down, so naturally, they weren’t too fond of him either.
Evander knew what was bothering them. He walked over to Kristen and started massaging her shoulders. “Mom, Dad, this is about my future marriage. You have to help me this time.”
Byron and Kristen exchanged glances, almost doubting what they’d heard and not daring to believe Evander had

“Stop messing with us. I’ll be lucky if I see you get married before I die.” Byron’s voice was heavy with
