Ingrid had called Angeline's number but found she'd been blocked. She couldn't think of any other way to reach Angeline other than staking out Lawson Global.
Lenny passed Ingrid's message to Angeline. She glanced at Ingrid's car through the rearview mirror, then checked the time. She nodded.
"Let's head to the cafe over there."
Ingrid and Angeline sat in a quiet corner of the cafe. Ingrid took the seat opposite Angeline's and looked at her with red eyes.
She said, "I've lost. In fact, I never won at all. I didn't want to admit it, but Ned only fell for me because I was imitating you."
Tears rolled down her face as she spoke.
Angeline said calmly, "If this is all you came to say, you really didn't need to do it at the expense of my car."
She put down her coffee cup and picked up her phone to check the time. She was evidently starting to lose her patience.
Ingrid wiped her tears and exhaled loudly.
She was still choked up as she said, "May I ask you to visit Ned, Angie? Mr. Fletcher Senior whipped him with a belt, but he insisted on going back to work without going to the hospital.
"He also had lots to drink. He started burning up earlier this afternoon, yet he's still refusing to go to the hospital. I've run out of ideas."
"You might love your fiancé enough not to mind having his ex-wife visit him, but I mind."
Angeline smiled at Ingrid as she traced a finger on her phone. She sat there, looking leisurely and casual.
"I'm not a saint, so I won't have the mood or time to waste on people who've hurt me in the past.
