Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 75

Alexander coughed. "No, Elijah. I…"

He felt like no amount of explaining would get him out of this.

Elijah set down his glass on the table, grabbed his jacket from the side, and got up to leave.

Alexander clutched his throat to suppress his coughing. "Where are you going?"

"To find my wife!" The words came out naturally and casually.

"Wait. I've heard quite a bit of gossip about your wife these past few days."

Alexander's words successfully stopped Elijah in his tracks. He looked over, his gaze piercing. Alexander felt a chill creeping up the back of his neck. Why did he have to bring this up?

But the words had already left him, so he could only say honestly, "A lot of people are paying to dig up information on her."

Trouble tended to follow when people got famous. Although Louisa wasn't a celebrity, marrying Elijah was like something straight out of a fairy tale, which made her the center of attention. Some were jealous, others were envious, and some were looking to stir up trouble.

Hearing that, Elijah's brows furrowed slightly.

Alexander figured he might as well risk it all. "Originally, her life was quite peaceful. Now, because of you, it's been completely shattered. Don't you feel even a little guilty?"

"What are you trying to say?" Elijah's voice took on a cold edge.

"Letitia's back. Is she about to wake up?" Alexander asked directly.

Elijah's gaze turned icy, but Alexander continued anyway. "If she wakes up..."

Before he could finish, Elijah cut him off coldly. "Send word to those people. Why are they paying to gain information? Just come ask me."

"So that they could get themselves killed?" Alexander finally caught his breath. "Elijah, if you really want to stay with her, then protect that woman. Her past was pretty tragic. Even if you have ulterior motives, show some mercy. She really has had a difficult life."

Alexander felt as though the temperature in the room had suddenly plunged. He rubbed the back of his neck. "You can leave now."

Elijah lifted the arm holding his jacket. Alexander quickly dodged to the side, only to see Elijah drape the jacket over his arm. "Yeah. Compared to you, it is pretty tragic."
