Christina didn't know how to accept his request. He was hugging her and she wasn't exactly the type of person to give a hug to someone like him but still she didn't move until he untangled himself from her.
"What happened?" She asked worriedly "are you okay? Did something happen at work? Are you sick?"
He shook his head, "I was just worried about you so I decided to come over and see if you're okay."
He wasn't saying the full truth but then again, it wasn't exactly a lie. He was worried that if he said the real reason why he came here then she would grow uncomfortable and possibly kick him out of her house.
"Of course I'm okay. I went for lunch with Nathan so I'm definitely going to be okay." She answered casually.
"That's why I told you not to come today because I won't be available. Nathan is a good guy and he took care of me so there's nothing to worry about." She said and went into the kitchen to grab a glass of water before joining him at the living room.
Max on the other hand, felt something like jealousy course through his veins. Was she purposely telling him that to make him feel bad or what?
"Of course I'll worry. Because you know him doesn't mean that I do." He snapped even though he didn't mean to. Christina was tight-lipped. She didn't exactly know why he was upset. As far as she was concerned, she didn't say anything bad to trigger this reaction from him.
"That's because I'm his friend and not you." She primped. "Why are you even upset about this? What's it to you?"
"I'm not upset. I'm just trying to do my duty as your brother in law's best friend. If he was in my place then he'd say and do the same as well." He cautioned her.
"Men over here are a different breed and will prey on anything. You're not an exception. They will do anything to get close and you know it too." He went on to say.
"I'm trying to protect you cupcake. To watch out for you so that you don't get hurt or get into trouble."
"I'm not a child Max. I'm not a weak and helpless girl that needs protection." She retorted fiercely. He was slowly starting to get on her nerves and it angered her. Why would he be saying things like these?
She never expected him to lecture her in this manner and what's worse is the anger in his tone like she had done something abominable.
"Why does everyone think I need someone watching over me? I don't need a savior Max. Just because I came from the convent doesn't mean that I'm stupid. I can take care of myself and I don't need anyone especially you, dotting on me."
"Especially me?" He was taken aback by that statement. "What does that even mean?"
"Well, maybe you're worried because you're scared that people like you might try to do to me what you do to other women." She countered leaving him speechless.
"Excuse me?" He was appalled by her words. "People like me? So you think that I will hurt you?"
"Is there another reason why you'd be scared? I don't think so. And I can assure you that Nathan is nothing like you so you. Just like me, he's from a good devoted family so you don't have to worry about me getting hurt."
Max drove to his hotel. He wanted to have a time alone with his thoughts without any kind of interference. He contemplated between home and his hotel but he chose the latter.
The hotel was better, it was safer because then, he wouldn't have to deal with the struggle of bringing a woman to spend the night. His sexcapedes always began and ended at his hotel.
When he arrived, he poured a glass of whiskey for himself as he drowned himself in his thoughts. He couldn't believe that she had indirectly called him a horrible person.
He knew that he wasn't a saint but he would never hurt her. He was just concerned about her well-being. Isn't that what friends do for each other? Well, they weren't exclusive friends but still, all he wanted to do was help and she didn't think twice before pointing her fingers at him, damn!
He took another swig and another till his body slowly began to relax. Well, since he was an animal, he'd better do what animals are good at. At least, no one would judge him for it.
Collapsing on the couch at the corner of the room, he picked up his phone and dialled Cherry's number to invite her over and then Nora's number. She picked up at the second ring.
"Sir—"
"Someone is on her way to see me." He cut her short. "Send
her up as soon as she arrives." He ordered and disconnected the phone.
