They made it to the orphanage just in time. It was a long ride and Christina was grateful that they didn't get into an accident themselves before arriving there.
Apparently, there was a fire outbreak and Max had called the paramedics before they arrived. He met the caregivers at the entrance who rushed out to welcome him.
"What happened?" He asked, a certain panic feeling slowly rising inside him. Christina who noticed how agitated he had become, slipped her hands into his to hold on and he immediately tightened his grip on hers without realizing it.
She didn't know why but for some reason, she wanted to offer support in any way that she could.
She knew that he might still be mad at her for what happened between them last time but it doesn't mean that she shouldn't be a decent human because of that.
"There was an electrical malfunction and it caused a fire but Carl got caught in it somehow." One of the caregiver explained as they made their way inside.
"We've called the technicians to check it out and they'll be here soon. We didn't know what to do and that's why we called to let you know."
"I'm glad you did." Max commended her. "But where is he?"
"In their room. The nurse is checking up on him. I'll take you there now." She said and walked in front to lead the way while they quietly followed.
Minutes later, they arrived at an open door and ushered themselves inside to see Carl lying down on the bed with the nurse examining him.
Luckily, he didn't sustain any major injuries. That was a great relief.
"Hey buddy," Max called out, walking to the other side of the bed while Christina stood at a corner, watching him.
"How are you feeling now?" He asked, placing his hand on his forehead to feel his temperature.
"I'm feeling fine Max. You didn't have to come. Did I bother you?" He asked but Max shook his head at him.
"Not at all. I wasn't busy so I came as fast as I could." He told him and the little boy chuckled in delight. If you didn't know, you wouldn't even think that he was involved in an accident a while ago.
Christina wasn't at all surprised at well he communicated with the kids at the orphanage. He did have a child after all so it's natural that he knew how to take care of one.
"Did you get hurt anywhere?" He asked but the little boy shook his head In the negative.
"How is he nurse? Is there anything wrong with him?" Max asked worriedly but she only smiled at him in reassurance.
"He's going to be okay. He's just a little shocked by what happened. I'll prescribe some drugs for the pain and ointment for the burns. He should be better in a few days."
"Thank you." He whispered gratefully. "How did any of his happen anyway?"
"Well..." He trailed off, looking from the caregivers across the room to Max who was seated beside him.
"It was an accident believe me." He started. "We were playing a game and I got myself trapped inside the store room. I noticed the spark and tried to leave but it blew up and that's when they found me."
"It isn't your fault but you should be careful. Something bad could've happened to you." Max chided him.
"I know that now." He sighed deeply. "I'll be more careful from now on."
Max ruffled his hair. "That's a good boy."
"I even contemplated on calling him over here today but," the woman continued, snapping her away from her thoughts.
"If I didn't call him and he found out later then he would've been upset. He was the one who requested that we inform him if anything were to go wrong so we always do."
"I didn't even think that he'd come but I'm glad that he did. Despite the fact that it wasn't for the right reason, he still managed to put a smile on their precious little faces." She added before facing the little boy.
Christina was impressed. Despite his other character that she doesn't find alluring, he had a good side to him. Maybe, she was too hard on him when she said all those hurtful things to him.
He might not be the type of man with the proper morals or anything but if anything, he cared for her and that part was genuine.
Like, he could've literally dropped her off on the street when she asked him to but he didn't. Even when he was angry, he still didn't. You don't see that everyday.
"Hey cupcake," He beckoned and she turned to see him approaching her. "It's getting late and I have to take you home or your brother in-law will have my head."
"Shall we?" He asked, stretching out his hands towards her and she hesitantly took it.
"Hey little man, I have to go but I promise to check in you soon okay?" He said and after the boy gave him permission, he turned to face Christina. "Come on, let's go."
She let him lead the way, hand in hand as they walked outside the building. It was almost nighttime and she knew that she was supposed to be worried being outside this long with him but for some reason, she wasn't.
For some reason, a part
of her that she didn't want to admit to yet, knew that she was safe as long as she was with him.
