Chapter 7
The interrogation room lights were harsh and blinding white.
I sat in the victim’s seat.
The wound on my neck bandaged up.
Though the drug’s effects still lingered, sending waves of dizziness through me every so often.
The door burst open.
Holden’s mother Linda Chase stormed in with the Chase family’s lawyer, Warren King, right behind her.
Linda looked at me like I’d murdered her entire family.
“Sutton Law! You cursed woman!”
“What did you do to my boy? He’s so young! How could you be so vicious!”
She lunged forward to slap me, but the female officer beside me reacted fast and blocked her.
“Stop it! This is a police station! Calm down!”
Linda was shoved back, but she kept pointing and screaming.
“Calm down? My son’s been arrested and you want me to calm down?”
“Young couples fight–did you really need to call the cops?”
“And drugs? My boy doesn’t even smoke!”
“You framed him! You must’ve taken something yourself and pinned it on him!”
I looked at this elegant woman with her foul mouth and almost laughed.
“Mrs. Chase, I wish it were a misunderstanding too, but Jade’s still in the ICU fighting for her life.”
“The doctors said she ingested a lethal dose of a new synthetic drug”
“If I hadn’t splashed it in her face so she didn’t swallow it all, she’d be a corpse right now.”
“And that drink? Holden handed it to me personally.”
Linda froze for a second, then her eyes darted around.
“That… that little tramp Jade brought it herself! What’s that got to do with my boy?”

Chapter 7
“He obviously didn’t know it was drugged! He just wanted you to have a drink!
“You can’t blame someone for what they don’t know!”
Warren King, who’d been silent this whole time, finally spoke up.
“Miss Law, based on the current evidence, there’s nothing proving my client knew what was in the drink.”
“Also, no additional drugs were found at the scene. The statements from Leo and the others are vague at best.”
“If Miss Jade brought and added the substance herself, my client bears no responsibility.”
“As for the alleged attempted sexual assault, you two are engaged with a marriage contract in place.”
“Intimate behavior in a private setting between engaged partners is difficult to classify as against someone’s will.”
Then he pulled out a check and pushed it across the table to me.
“My recommendation is: settle. Five million.”
“Just change your statement, say it was all a misunderstanding, and this money is yours.”
“Additionally, the Chase family will immediately invest five hundred million into your family’s company to solve your father’s urgent crisis.”
I looked at that check.
Five million…
To buy a criminal’s innocence and freedom?
“Mr. King,” I stared into his eyes. “You have a doctorate in law?”
Warren lifted his chin slightly. “Yeah. Harvard Law, doctorate in criminal law.”
“So, you should know that obstruction of justice carries a maximum sentence of seven years. What you’re doing right now constitutes solicitation of perjury.”
Warren’s face darkened: “Miss Law, you can’t talk nonsense here. I’m attempting mediation here.”
“If you insist on pressing charges, I think you understand the Chase family’s connections.”
“This case could drag on for a year or two–how long can your father’s company hold out?”
“When your family’s bankrupt and you’re on the streets, will you still have the energy to lecture me about laws?”
This was a naked threat, and their greatest source of confidence–capital and power.
In their eyes, the law was just chains for the poor and toys for the rich!

Chapter 7
Seeing the lawyer gain the upper hand, Linda became arrogant again.
“You hear that? Ungrateful bitch!”
“Sign it now! Or tomorrow your dad can start begging on the streets! And don’t come crawling to the Chase family’s door later!”
I picked up the check. “Does this have Holden’s signature on it?”
Linda scoffed. “My boy’s still locked up, so of course I signed it.”
“What? Think it’ll bounce? I, Linda Chase, don’t stoop that low!”
I smiled. “No. I’m just confirming the source of this ‘hush money.”
Then I tore the check into pieces.
“Mrs. Chase, Mr. King, you seem to have misunderstood something.”
“I’m not here to settle. I’m here to send your whole family to a reunion.”
I clapped twice.
“Come in.”
