Chapter 122 Unsettled Night
As for Elena…
This lifetime, he had failed her.

Camille sensed something off in his tone but did not dwell on it. She wrapped her arms around him. “Let’s get some sleep.”
In the middle of the night, Nathan jolted awake from a nightmare.
He sat up abruptly. Camille was already awake, watching him with a strange look in her eyes.
“What is it?” Nathan asked after steadying his breathing. “Why are you still up?”
“Nothing,” Camille said quickly, avoiding his gaze. “I just need to use the bathroom. Go back to sleep.”
She got out of bed and went inside, pressing a hand against her chest as she finally exhaled.
Something about what he said earlier did not sit right.
Why does he keep telling Elena not to blame him? Is it just because of the fake marriage? Or is it because, at the factory, he chose to save her instead of Elena?
The thought unsettled her. This was not that simple.
After splashing some water on her face, she returned to bed. Nathan was awake now.
She leaned into him and gradually fell asleep, while his hand absentmindedly brushed through her hair.
But the dream would not leave him.
Over and over, he saw Elena in the water.
The way she looked as she went under. It lingered.
Elena did not sleep well either.
The wound on her calf throbbed, the discomfort making her shift restlessly, her hand instinctively reaching toward it.
Before she could touch it, someone caught her wrist. Startled, she opened her eyes. Alexander’s gaze.

“When did you get here?”
It was already late into the night.
“I couldn’t sleep,” he said simply.

Finished
He had his own room, but that did not seem to matter. He pulled back the blanket and slid in beside her as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Elena instinctively shifted to the side, not realizing she was running out of space. Before she could move further, he caught her hand and pulled her back, her face pressed against his chest.
“You’re going to fall.”
His chin rested lightly against her head. She froze, not daring to move.
“My leg hurts,” she murmured, shifting slightly.
“Don’t move.”
He reached over and steadied her leg. “Unless you want a scar.”
She did not. She stayed still.
Being held this close felt unfamiliar, and she tried to push away slightly. “You’re holding me too tight. I can’t breathe.”
He did not let go. “I saved you. Sleeping next to you is too much to ask?”
She had no answer.
She tilted her head slightly and realized his breathing had already evened out. He looked exhausted, eyes closed, lashes casting faint shadows.
Something about the warmth and steadiness of him eased the tension in her body.
Gradually, she relaxed. And fell asleep against him.
The next morning, Sophia arrived with her laptop and other things.
Her expression was not great.
“You know what Lydia asked me when I went to grab your stuff?” Sophia said, clearly annoyed. “She wanted proof. Like, actual photos of your injury. She thinks you’re faking it to slack off.”
Elena frowned slightly.

“I told her she could come see for herself, but she wouldn’t. Instead, she told me to remind yo not to fall behind on your assignments.”
“Sorry you had to deal with that,” Elena said.
“I’m fine,” Sophia replied, handing over the laptop. “I just think she’s clearly targeting you. Anyone can see it.”
Elena logged into Velmora Media’s internal system using her executive account under the name Lucy.
Just as expected, Lydia had left multiple messages.
“Lucy, this is Lydia from the editorial department,” Lydia sent.
“The Hawthorne Group factory fire is currently being covered by Elena and Camille.”
And then, today she sent, “Lucy, there’s been an issue with Elena’s report. She’s currently in th hospital. Her assistant claims she was injured on–site. How should we proceed?”
Workplace injuries were always taken seriously.
Elena typed back.
“Follow standard workplace injury protocol.”
Lydia responded almost immediately, “Understood, but I have concerns. Elena just joined the company, and on her first field assignment she’s already using this as an excuse to disappear. I suspect she’s avoiding work.”
She continued, “Camille was on the same assignment and showed up to work today with only minor injuries. Even while pregnant, she’s being professional. Elena’s reaction feels exaggerated.”
