She could not just sit back and let false reports spiral out of control, because the truth needed

to come out.

Alexander’s long fingers moved across the screen as he scrolled through the photos, then he handed the phone back to her.

You’re not leaving the hospital.

His tone left no room for negotiation.

Elena frowned slightly. Alexander, you can’t just decide that. We both have jobs, you know?

He let out a quiet scoff, his gaze sharp. I cracked my head open pulling you out of there, and it wasn’t so you could turn around and put yourself right back in danger.

But this story really matters.”

Then ask me nicely.

Elena blinked, caught off guard by how direct he was, and a faint flush crept up her face.

He did not look like he was joking.

She pressed her lips together, then lightly tugged at the hem of his shirt. Can I please be discharged? Please?

She clasped her hands together, looking at him expectantly, hoping he might give in. After all, he had saved her life, so giving him a little face felt reasonable.

Even if you ask, the answer’s still no.

There was a trace of amusement in his eyes as he gently pushed her back against the pillow and pulled the blanket up.

Elena felt a flicker of irritation.

Alexander turned and called Sophia back in. Bring everything she needs to work here, and get a couple of nurses to keep an eye on her.

Elena stared at him, then exhaled.

alternative, and honestly, it felt like having a private office to herself.

At the Hawthorne estate, Victor’s face twisted as he stared at Harold.

Are you absolutely sure Elena saw you?

Harold used to be his driver before a car accident left him with a limp, after which he was reassigned as a security guard at the Hawthorne Group garment factory.

I’m sure,” Harold said quickly. She had her phone out too. She must’ve taken pictures.

If Camille hadn’t shown up out of nowhere, I would’ve gotten the phone back. I didn’t know how much she had seen, and I couldn’t risk being exposed, so I had to let Elena go.

Harold hurried to defend himself, his voice tight with urgency.

Victor’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles along his cheeks visibly twitched, the restraint in his expression barely masking the fury building underneath.

He shot Nathan a cold look. And you? Did you get anything out of Elena?

Nathan recounted what had happened at the hospital.

I tried to get her phone, but she wouldn’t give it to me

His thoughts drifted to the way Alexander had been treating Elena, and as another man he could clearly sense the difference in that attitude, a subtle but undeniable shift that left him deeply unsettled.

Victor took a long drag from his cigarette. If she won’t cooperate, then we handle it differently.

Nathan’s heart skipped.

Dad, maybe Harold was mistaken. Elena might not have taken any pictures, and even if she saw him, it doesn’t mean she saw anything clearly. It was far away

Before he could finish, Victor slapped him hard across the face.

The sting burned instantly.

You think we can afford to take that risk?

Victor’s voice dropped, cold and dangerous.

Your uncle and his son are watching Hawthorne Group like vultures, waiting for a mistake. And you, you can’t even handle your own mess. You couldn’t even control Elena after five years.
