Alexander stepped out of the car and headed inside, taking the stairs two at a time.
When he reached the bedroom door, he noticed the soft glow spilling out from underneath it. The tightness that had been sitting in his chest all evening finally eased.
She was still awake.
So… she didn’t like me leaving either?
That possibility crossed his mind, and the corner of his lips lifted slightly without him realizing it.
He pushed the door open and walked in.
Elena was still up, wrapped in a throw blanket, sitting in front of her laptop. The soft light from the screen washed over her face, giving her an almost gentle, quiet warmth.
The moment Alexander saw her, something in him settled, like he had finally found where he was supposed to be.
“You’re back,” Elena said, looking up at him.
Her eyes followed him as he walked over.
“Did everything get taken care of with Fiona?”
Her voice was calm, neutral, giving nothing away.
Alexander stopped beside her. “Yeah. I had Ryan drive her home. Why are you still up?”
He glanced at the screen.
The faint smile that had been sitting on his face froze instantly.
Elena didn’t notice the shift in his expression. She scooted her chair slightly to the side, putting
a bit of distance between them, then turned the laptop so he could see it clearly.
“I had a lawyer draft up a postnuptial agreement,” Elena said. “Take a look. If everything looks okay to you, we can just go with this, alright?”
Originally, she had planned to bring this up another time, when the moment felt more appropriate.
She hadn’t expected him to come back this early.

The room fell into a quiet stillness.
Alexander’s expression tightened, but he didn’t say anything right away. Elena waited, then cleared her throat softly.
“If there’s anything you don’t like, we can go over it and make changes.”
She had already thought it through.
No matter what kind of feelings she had toward Alexander, after everything that happened with Nathan, she couldn’t accept being with someone whose heart still held space for another
woman.
Not even a fraction.
Alexander might not love Fiona.
But Fiona mattered to him. That much was undeniable.
Alexander’s gaze swept quickly across the document. She had planned everything out in detail.

Alexander almost let out a laugh, though there was no humor in it.
“You’ve really thought of everything,” he said, his tone edged.
“This is just a draft,” Elena replied. “There are probably still things we need to adjust, so there’s no rush to sign, we can-”
“Sign it.”
He cut her off, his voice low and firm.
“We’ll go with exactly what you wrote.”
He agreed so quickly that Elena froze for a moment. For reasons she couldn’t quite explain, a faint, uncomfortable ache spread through her chest.
“…Okay. I’ll have the lawyer print a formal copy tomorrow.”
“Do whatever you want.”

Elena shifted uncomfortably, turning over and scooting slightly to the right.
The next second, his arm wrapped around her, pulling her back into his chest.
His hand, warm and familiar, slipped under the hem of her nightgown.
Elena caught his wrist. “I don’t feel like it tonight.”
Alexander’s voice came from above her, low and rough. “Didn’t you say you’d fulfill your responsibilities as my wife this year? You’re backing out already?”
Elena fell silent.
His touch was steady, deliberate, almost like it carried heat. As his hand moved across her skin, she felt her resistance slipping away.
She couldn’t deny it.
In this… we really are perfectly in sync.
