The moment Gideon Flores saw her, he stepped forward and blocked the doorway. “I’m going to have to stop you right there. Dr. Mercer isn’t seeing any patients.”

Victoria lifted her chin slightly. “I’m here to see Julian. Let him know Victoria Hawthorne is here. He knows exactly who I am.”

As she spoke, her eyes drifted past Gideon into the house, openly sizing it up.

The place was simple, almost old–fashioned. No designer furniture, no statement pieces, nothing that matched what she considered “appropriate.”

She couldn’t hide the disdain on her face.

Gideon didn’t move an inch. “Like I said, he’s retired. He’s not taking appointments. You should leave.”

The maid immediately snapped, pointing at Gideon. “What’s your problem? Do you even know who she is? Even your mentor would treat her with respect. Who do you think you are, acting like this? Move. If her condition gets worse because of you, can you take responsibility?”

She stepped forward, trying to push him aside.

Gideon shifted back easily, his expression turning sharper, colder. “I know exactly who she is. My mentor made it very clear, someone like her, even if her asthma gets treated, it won’t fix what’s rotten underneath.”

He had been out of town recently and had only just gotten back.

Just then. Julian walked out from inside, holding a steaming mug of coffee.

“Dr. Mercer, please… you have to help me…” Victoria said, her tone shifting instantly, her eyes lighting up as if she’d just found a lifeline. She tried to step inside.

“Not happening.” Julian said calmly.

His response was just as firm as Gideon’s.

Victoria’s jaw tightened. “I’ll pay you two hundred thousand dollars. And if you keep treating me, I’ll pay even more. Professor Mercer, take a look around. You could be living somewhere far more comfortable.”

She didn’t believe, not for a second, that he would turn down that kind of money for Elena’s sake.

Gideon couldn’t help himself. He rolled his eyes.

Some people really did think money solved everything.

Julian and his wife lived here by choice. The neighborhood was quiet, the neighbors were familiar, and their days were peaceful. They could go for walks, chat with people they knew, enjoy life at their own pace.

Now, hearing this, he let out a cold, humorless laugh.

“The Hawthorne family really does think highly of itself. Two hundred thousand? That’s supposed to impress me?”

He took a slow sip of coffee before continuing, “If Elena hadn’t come to me personally back then, do you really think I would have taken your case?”

He lowered the cup slightly, his gaze sharpening.

“Gideon, show her out. Starting today, anyone from the Hawthorne family, or anyone connected to them, is not welcome here.”

“Yes, sir.” Gideon replied immediately, stepping forward.

Victoria’s attitude shifted on the spot, her tone softening noticeably. “Dr. Mercer, I spoke out of line earlier. But you’re a doctor. You can’t just turn a patient away like this. How about this, you name your price?”

Over the past few years, her condition had improved significantly under Julian’s care. If he refused now, she didn’t even know where to turn next.
