She drew a deep breath, worn out both physically and mentally, and sank into a chair. It was not long before Lucas arrived with several others.

“Ms. Sterling.” Lucas let out a relieved sigh and stepped forward. “Are you all right?”

Elena slowly lifted her head to look at him.

“Let’s head back.”

Two police officers stood behind Lucas. “Who took you away?”

Elena kept walking, her voice drifting back to them. No one. I just went for a walk. Let’s return to the hotel.”

Since she insisted on this, the officers dropped the inquiry. Lucas escorted her back to the hotel.

He had seen the surveillance footage and knew she had been abducted. Confused as to why she chose not to press charges, he caught up to her before she entered her room.

“Would you like me to take you to the hospital for a checkup? You’re pregnant, it’s better to be safe.”

“I’m fine. Go rest.” Elena only wanted to lie down.

Lucas had no choice but to leave.

Back in her room, Elena sank into a warm bath and closed her eyes, hoping to wash away all the unhappiness.

Nathan had helped a great deal during the search for Elena.

“She says she’s fine, but she looks pale. William let her go, and she has decided not to take this further.”

There was a long pause on the line. Just as Lucas thought the call had ended, Nathan spoke softly.

The next few days passed uneventfully. Innovatech arranged tours of their production lines for Elena. In her spare time, she shopped and picked out souvenirs for Sophia and Hannah. Soon enough, the day of her return home arrived.

She had just finished packing when an unfamiliar number called.

“Hello, is this Ms. Sterling?”

“Who’s speaking?” Elena frowned.

“You stayed at our hotel recently and checked out abruptly. Do you remember?”

“Yes. What is it?”

The staff asked if she had left early because she was dissatisfied with their service, saying they hoped to make improvements.

“This has nothing to do with your hotel. It’s my personal business.” Elena zipped up her suitcase and headed for the door.

Elena was about to hang up when the voice spoke again. “You know Mr. Hawthorne, right? He came looking for you in your room after you checked out. We also saw him asking our staff where to find good food, planning to bring you a meal.”

Elena froze. She had never heard of any of this. Still, it made no difference to her. Her relationship with Nathan would never change.

“I’m barely acquainted with him,” she cut him off coldly.

“Oh…” The staff member was caught off guard by her blunt denial and grew awkward. “The thing is, we found his wallet while cleaning the room. No one answers his calls, and there’s a photo of you inside it
